Interactive-Digital Storytelling Project in the community

Fusion, innovation, Public engagement James Pope

For five busy days in May, Faculty of Media and Communication academics Jim Pope, Brad Gyori, Kay Stonham, and Rutherford worked with local youngsters to produce a fully-working, online interactive narrative. Using a bespoke software package (Genarrator) developed within FMC with Fusion funding, five young people at the AIM community arts centre, Kinson, created a twisty tale of cyber-romance.

The project was a collaboration between FMC, and the staff at AIM central, the Bournemouth hub designed to give opportunities for self-expression and personal growth via performing arts, to unemployed teens, at-risk children, young offenders, and local young people more broadly. Jim Pope liaised with AIM leaders, Celeste Engel and Richard Newland, to bring together five young people, three of whom were ‘NEETS’, to work as a group to create a narrative that would blend film, words, music, graphics, and online interactivity. With a varied skill set, Brad (scripting and filming), Kay (scripting) and Rutherford (photography) were able to catalyse the enthusiasm and abilities of the young people, and from a standing start a plot emerged: all the writing, filming, recording, photography, and Genarrator design was completed in the five days that were allocated at the centre.

With support from the Centre for the Study of Journalism, Culture and Community, we were also able to involve three of our BA Multi-Media Journalism students, who documented the whole week, and have produced a short video of the event. See the You Tube video here: https://youtu.be/PSSvcKL3GbU

Given the success of this small project, Jim and the AIM team are discussing funding sources to develop a larger project which can give opportunities to more BU undergraduates and more young people from the community.

A great day enjoying Life by the River

Yesterday the Life by the River Team welcomed over 130 guests to their Festival of Learning Event at the Kingfisher Barn next to the River Stour near Throop. The event was development by Holly Crossen-White and Angela Turner-Wilson from the Public Health Cluster in partnership with Tom Clarke from the RSPB and staff from Bournemouth Borough Council Parks. The aim of the event was to encourage the public to consider the health and wellbeing benefits that can be gained by spending time enjoying the natural environment. Of those who completed an evaluation form 63 % of visitors had never been to this stretch of the River Stour before and all said they planned to return. The Team received lots of positive feedback about the event with visitors saying ‘there was a brilliant atmosphere’ , ‘really relaxing’ and ‘lots of fun for everyone’.

Life by the River

Members of the Public Health Cluster have been working in partnership with Tom Clarke from the RSPB over the last two years to to promote to the public the many health and wellbeing benefits there are from spending time outside enjoying the natural environment. The Team has also been working with Bournemouth Borough Council, Parks staff and supporting the development of a project based on a stretch of the River Stour. Heritage Lottery funding had enabled the creation of the Kingfisher Barn, a new visitor’s centre alongside the River Stour, near Throop. To showcase the work the project team Holly and Angela (BU), Tom (RSPB) and Bournemouth Parks staff have developed a Festival of Learning Event at the Kingfisher Barn with lots of outdoor activities for visitors of all ages. There will be an opportunity to discover how previous generations have lived their life by the river and there will be some lovely family photos showing how life was that have been generously provided by local families who have also shared their memories and helped Holly bring together the exhibition. There will be some messy things to do too so maybe pack some wellies if you would like to help create a cobb structure with Heidi a local artist who has been working with the Team. The event is this Sunday – 26th June at the Kingfisher Barn between 11am and 3pm.

Festival of Learning 25 – 29 June

Bournemouth University’s Festival of Learning kicks off this Saturday with our Family Day, which includes lots of free, fun-filled activities, workshops, events and talks. This year we are delighted to welcome one of National Geographic’s Adventurers of the Year, Alastair Humphreys, to open the festival during our Family Day by sharing stories from his worldwide expeditions and adventures.

We have a jam-packed five-day programme of free events, activities and opportunities to learn something new. From martial arts to solving cybercrime, there’s something for everyone.

The annual Festival of Learning is now in its fourth year and the programme is designed to encourage the general public to engage with the university through different types of activities that highlight the wide range of research taking place at BU. Plus for the first year ever, we are introducing the Global Festival of Learning with festival events running simultaneously in China and Malaysia, with BU staff and students taking part in an international celebration of learning.

Eating and drinking well: Supporting people living with dementia – impact at national events

Dr Jane Murphy and Joanne Holmes have continued their impact work of their project ‘Eating and drinking well: Supporting people living with dementia’ at a number of national events recently. They spoke alongside other leading dementia experts at Dementia 2020 in Manchester, the Alzheimer’s Show at Olympia in London and the AGE UK /LSE/NHS England interactive workshops on dignity and nutrition for older people in hospital Age UK/NHS England in London and Leeds. Taken together with other work, it has resulted in a significant amount of interest from the health and social care sectors leading to the successful dissemination and evaluation of the training material developed through the research. Quote from a registered care home manager who completed the training:

” …we have now revolutionised our meal times and this has proven to be of great success, in the few short weeks of implementing this we have observed and recorded an increase in weight with the majority of our residents and a more sociable and interactive feel that surrounds our mealtimes.”

The various forms of terrorist violence

The murder of Jo Cox MP last week draws our attention to neglected dimensions of the problem of ‘radicalisation’. While a threat of neo-Nazi terrorist activity has existed in Britain for some time, we have tended – for understandable reasons – to use this term only in connection with the recruitment of young Muslims to violent takfiri Islamism. As yet only very little is publicly known about her killer and his motives, but the evidence we have, including that that he chose to present his action as political, suggests two things. One is that the ‘radicalisation’ of individuals (whatever that process is) to the point where they become capable of murder is not only a problem of Islamism. The other is that the mental health factor in today’s terrorisms cannot now be ignored.

Sadly, the topic of the third BU ‘Dialogue in the Social Sciences’ now has added urgency. To be held at 5.15 on Wednesday 22 June, in the EBC, the title of this public event is ‘Radicalisation: what is it and what threat does it pose?’ Professor Matthew Feldman of Teesside University is an expert on the Far Right; he will be joined by Emma el-Badawy of the University of Exeter and Dr Usama Hasan of the counter-radicalisation organisation the Quilliam Foundation, both experts on violent Islamism. Professor Barry Richards will be in the chair.

The Women’s Academic Network (WAN) is heading towards its 3^rd birthday in the Autumn. During that time we’ve put on many events designed to inspire our members, air and discuss concerns, build confidence, offer support and undertake research. We’ve heard some extraordinary speakers like feminist godmother, Germaine Greer, and courageous polar explorer, Felicity Aston.

Now it’s time to celebrate our own remarkable female colleagues. So where better to look for inspiration than the University of Cambridge book focusing on insights from their female dons in The Meaning of Success. Consequently next academic year we are planning to create a WAN publication of what women’s success looks like at BU, which will be used for general use across the university and beyond.

To embark on this new journey we were delighted to hold the first WAN book launch in May to celebrate the recent and important publications of three WAN colleagues. Professor Candida Yates is the author of The Play of Political Culture, Emotion & Identity , a highly intriguing and original socio-political-psychoanalytic analysis of relationships made and manipulated between the viewer and the political media ‘personality’.

Dr Bronwen Thomas, Associate Professor, has produced a ground-breaking textbook entitled Narrative: the basics. This volume draws from her extensive teaching practice to bring together a wealth of theoretical material to explain the diverse forms of and models underpinning fictional narrative.

Finally, Dr Julia Round, Principal Lecturer, has produced a marvellously eye-catching monograph with obvious wide readership appeal: Gothic in Comics & Graphic Novels Here the interface between comics and the gothic is examined through multiple analytic lenses.

Which brings us most appropriately to an early preview about The Shelley-Frankenstein Festival, 7^thNovember ~ WAN is delighted to be part of the launch of this new and innovative Bournemouth-wide festival with 2 public engagement seminars planned at BU. Stakeholders include St Peter’s Town Centre Parish Church, Bournemouth County Council, AUB, Shelley Theatre, artists and musicians. More details to follow.

We are a team of researchers at Bournemouth University (BU) and represent the BU Research Staff Association (RSA).

We thought you might like to know that we are holding an event as part of the annual BU Festival of Learning.

Our event ‘Making a difference through research: research with impact’ is on Tuesday 28th June from 4pm until 7pm and will be held at the Talbot Campus. During this event we will be showcasing research that makes a difference and responds to societal need. BU hosts public meeting on ‘radicalisation’

The third BU ‘Dialogue in the Social Sciences’ will be held at 5.15 on Wednesday 22 June, in the EBC. This series of public meetings is bringing together social scientists and experts from outside academia to discuss social issues of pressing concern. Previous events have discussed the future of HE, and crime and the media. The title of this one is ‘Radicalisation: what is it and what threat does it pose?’ As with previous events in this series, there is an impressive panel. Professor Matthew Feldman of Teesside University is an expert on the Far Right; he will be joined by Emma el-Badawy of the University of Exeter and Dr Usama Hasan of the counter-radicalisation organisation the Quilliam Foundation, both experts on violent jihadism. Professor Barry Richards will be in the chair.

International Clinical Trials Day 2016

On 17 May, The Royal Bournemouth Hospital celebrated the International Clinical Trials Day 2016. The TACIT Trial (TAi Chi for people with demenTia) Team had been invited to give a presentation at this event. Yolanda Barrado-Martín (pictured here) as PhD Researcher working on the trial attended the event and gave a talk on the impact and characteristics of the project. The audience was mainly formed by professionals working at the Hospital, academics, and the principal guest was The Worshipful The Mayor of Bournemouth.

Flying the KEIT for knowledge exchange and impact at BU

It’s been a busy month for BU’s Knowledge Exchange and Impact Team (based in Melbury House, if you’d like to come and see us), with many of us out and about supporting events across the university. Below is a small selection of our activities. If you’d like to find out more about our team and how we can support your research, do get in touch.

Impact

This week, we’ve been busy supporting our Impact Champions to run a series of events to support the development of research impact, ranging from working with the media to influencing policy. It’s been great to see so many of you taking part and we hope you’ve found them useful. If you’d like to find out more about how to develop your research impact, please do ask anyone in RKEO for an impact mini guide or view the full toolkit on the staff intranet.

Festival of Learning

There’s only a month to go until the Festival of Learning returns to BU (25 – 29 June). We’ll be repeating last year’s very successful family day to kick off the Festival on Saturday, where National Geographic Adventurer of the Year, Alastair Humphries, will be sharing tales of his adventures.

We have a great range of events, with something to appeal to every interest, so do have a look at the website and sign up.

Student engagement

Our final 14:Live of this academic year saw BU students and staff debating whether we should remain in or leave the European Union (EU). The lively debate was hosted by BU’s Dr Dan Jackson, whose research covers media, communication and politics. The debate saw two teams of students debate the merits of staying in or leaving the EU, covering topics such as economics, politics and the environment. The final vote was overwhelming in favour of staying in the EU.

Undergraduate Research Assistants

Our ever-popular URA scheme has seen 42 BU students recruited to work with academics on research projects during the spring. They are currently finishing their placements and the full-time summer cohort will soon begin.

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships

Since the beginning of April, there have been a number of changes to processes within Knowledge Transfer Partnerships. For example; there is a new online application form, no need for an expression of interest form and Associate employment budget rates have changed. For further information, please contact Rachel Clarke, Knowledge Exchange Adviser (KTP).

The recent May KTP submission deadline saw an application go in from the Faculty of Media and Communication.

BUCRU and the Blustery Day

To celebrate International Clinical Trials Day Helen Allen, Lisa Gale-Andrews, Louise Ward and Sharon Docherty from the BU Clinical Research Unit (BUCRU) were at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital yesterday to take part in their event hosted by the Research & Development department.

International Clinical Trials Day is celebrated on or near 20^th May each year, to commemorate James Lind’s famous scurvy trial. It aims to raise awareness of the importance of research in healthcare, and how involving the patients and public is essential in ensuring high-quality, relevant research. On International Clinical Trials Day, the National Institute for Health Research promotes its ‘OK to ask’ campaign to encourage patients to ask about clinical research.

It was a fun-packed day that highlighted some of the exciting research being done at, and in association with, the Trust. The Alzheimer’s Society, Stroke Association, Cancer Research UK, and BUCRU set up camp next to the lake to welcome members of the public and staff from the hospital. In addition to talking to staff members about how we can help them with their research, we highlighted how members of the public can get involved with research at all levels. Sharon got people involved by offering a simple task to show how different people perceive upright… things got a bit competitive!

Helen Allen, Vanora Hundley and Yolanda Barrado-Martin also gave talks about BU research and how to get involved.

It was a lovely day, albeit a bit blustery by early afternoon which saw some of the other gazebos take flight. We managed to hang on (not without effort and thanks to the substantial gazebo borrowed from the BU public engagement team) at least until our visit from the Mayor of Bournemouth.

At least it didn’t rain…

In the week that sees the publication of the White Paper and the Queen’s speech, issues of widening participation and education equity seem even more topical than ever.

BU’s programme of Fair Access Research seeks to create a culture of widening participation through working and learning together.

As part of BU’s Festival of Learning, our Fair Access Researchers will be facilitating a workshop exploring educational disadvantage in the region.

Bournemouth, Poole and surrounding region face significant challenges when it comes to supporting those most in need to access and succeed in education. These challenges are being tackled by dedicated experts working hard to support disadvantaged learners to engage in a variety of education settings.

The event will be held on Monday 27 June 2016 between 14:00-16:00 in the new FUSION BUILDING, TALBOT CAMPUS.

We are inviting experts working in the field of education and equality to come together and share experiences and skills to find sustainable solutions to the region’s major education challenges.

We want grassroots solutions to grassroots challenges facing the region. This approach will enable targeted and tailored responses that work with the unique challenges of education and social justice in a diverse rural and coastal region.

In this innovative two-hour workshop, we will work together to find sustainable solutions to the question:

“What are the challenges and opportunities for disadvantaged students to access education in the region?”

This workshop is about active participation by all those involved and collectively developing grassroots solutions. By taking part, you will be helping to build a community to turn challenges and barriers into opportunities and bridges.

We want you to be involved and to shape how our responses! So, please share with your colleagues and networks so that we can have a broad range of participants. We are particularly interested in learning from the expertise and experiences of:

Pupil premium leads
Further education practitioners
Youth workers
Community educators and activists
Special Education Co-ordinators

It is through working together and learning with each other that we can help make regional education opportunities more accessible and more sustainable.

Pramod Regmi in today’s The Himalayan Times

Today the English-language daily newspaper The Himalayan Times published an article by Dr. Pramod Regmi (BU’s Faculty of Health & Social Sciences) and Dr. Nirmal Aryal (University of Otago, New Zealand) on the growing diabetes problem in South Asia. Dr. Regmi is post-doctoral researcher who focuses, among other topics, on diabetes research in the UK. The Himalayan Times is published in Nepal and has a wide readership in Kathmandu. BUDI Open Meeting held on 11 May 2016

Last Wednesday, Bournemouth University Dementia Institute (BUDI) held their fourth annual Open Day. The event marked a new era for BUDI as Dr Jan Wiener and Dr Jane Murphy announced their arrival as the new Head and Co-Head of the Institute, respectively. The event was BUDI’s most successful yet with close to 100 people attending including academics, local practitioners, business, charity and care managers as well as people with dementia and their care partners. This emphasises the great in-roads BUDI continues to make within the local community and the interest that their research is generating.

The event consisted of five presentations delivered by BUDI staff and PhD researchers. Kicking it off, Mary O’Malley, Ramona Grzeschik and Chris Hilton spoke about their project on ‘Wayfinding in Dementia.’ This is fast becoming a specialist area within BUDI after the success of Jan Wiener’s ESRC grant. Following this, Samuel Nyman and Yolanda Barrado-Martin discussed their recently funded NIHR project that aims to use Tai Chi for people with dementia and their care partners. Michelle Heward then outlined the work she has been doing with the local fire service to develop training that enables them to support people with dementia living at home, before Ben Hicks spoke about the innovative ‘Cage Cricket’ project that he is delivering at Hampshire Cricket ground. Finally Rick Fisher concluded the talks by promoting the new BUDI Online Masters Programme that started this academic year. The range of talks highlighted the varied research that BUDI continues to undertake within its remit as a cross-discipline Institute.

The post-presentation activities included a networking and poster session before Michelle Heward closed the event by delivering a Dementia Friends Awareness Session as part of BUDI’s wider aim to ensure Bournemouth becomes a Dementia-Friendly University.

Feedback suggested the event was an enjoyable day out for all those who attended and helped to ensure that BUDI continues to play an integral role in supporting those living with dementia and their care partners within the Dorset County.
