British Academy Small Grants Workshop

British Academy Small Grants Workshop aimed at all staff with Research Council bids in development.

The attendees will have a chance to ask questions from recent British Academy Award winners.
as well as to discuss their proposal with a Research Facilitator. The Funding Development Officers will also be on hand to answer any questions relating to budget and processes.

The call for the next round of BA/Leverhulme Small Research Grants will open 5th April 2023 and close 5pm on Wednesday 7th June 2023 and RDS will be running a guidance session for academics who are interested in submitting an application.

RKEDF Workshop: Public and Patient Involvement in Research – Tuesday 24 January 2-3:30pm

Knowledge Exchange, Public engagement, Training ballen

Led by Public Involvement in Education and Research (PIER), this session will look at how to meaningfully involve patients and service users in the research process.

This workshop will offer an engaging introduction to the what, why and how of public involvement in research. It is co-designed and facilitated by Rachel Jury and Tim Worner, who have extensive experience of sharing their lived experience expertise in research studies, Dr Mel Hughes, Academic Lead for the BU PIER Partnership and Angela Warren, PIER involvement coordinator.

The session cover the different approaches to public involvement; the public contributor role; the benefits of public involvement and what pitfalls to avoid. It will also provide an opportunity for researchers to learn about public involvement and to consider this from the perspective of experts by experience and in relation to their own research.

This will be interactive with opportunities for researchers to share and discuss ideas and plans.

Intended outcomes

Develop a knowledge and understanding of different models of public involvement
Consider the benefits of public involvement for a research study and all those involved
Identify best practice in designing and conducting public involvement in research

RKEDF Evaluation Workshops: Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 February

The Public Engagement with Research Team are running two workshops in February: Evaluation of Engagement and Advanced Evaluation.

These sessions will be delivered by Dr Jamie Gallagher, one of the most experienced engagement trainers in the UK. Jamie is a dynamic and engaging trainer who makes these sessions enjoyable as well as useful.

It is recommended that both sessions are attended to gain the full benefit. The sessions will build skills from the basic principles of evaluation, through to being able to develop evaluation plans for even the most complex topics, exploring data capture, analysis and reporting. You’ll also learn how to write evaluation reports for funders or for the REF (Research Excellence Framework).

While both sessions are recommended, attending just the first session may be appropriate for your needs. It is advised against only attending the second session.

Evaluation of Engagement: Monday 20 February, 9am-12:30pm, Talbot Campus

This workshop will highlight what you need to ask yourself, and the public, to ensure you can demonstrate the success of your intervention and capture the long term impact of it.

Successful public engagement can benefit research, researchers and the public – but how do you go about demonstrating this change? This workshop will guide you through the best evaluation processes showing you when, why and crucially how to use evaluation to give you reliable and clear data. It will highlight how to demonstrate success to funders, record impact for the REF, help to improve your processes, and give you a better understanding of the people you are connecting with.

At the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

Understand the purposes, uses and limitations of evaluation
Apply event-appropriate evaluation methods in multiple scenarios
Prepare useful, answerable and relevant evaluation questions
Devise and deliver your own evaluation plan
Interpret and report evaluation data.

Taking an in-depth look at evaluation, participants will explore data capture, analysis and reporting. From surveys to focus groups, you will learn how to format powerful questions and report meaningful data. Discover how to develop evaluation plans for even the most complex topics. You will also learn how to write evaluation reports for funders or for the REF.

This workshop requires good base knowledge of evaluation, ideally from attending the previous Evaluation of engagement workshop.

Last BU paper of 2022

On the very last day of 2022 the Nepal Journal of Epidemiology published our editorial ‘Guidance to applying for health research grants in the UK’. [1] The lead author is Dr. Brijesh Sathian who is BU Visiting Faculty as well as Deputy Chair for Research in the Geriatrics and Long-term Care Department in Rumailah Hospital based in Doha, Qatar. The paper is written to help researchers in low- and middle-income countries who are interested in applying to UK-based research funders in the health field. This editorial on grant writing adds to the large numbers of papers on many aspects of academic writing and publishing, which have been written by academics in the Faculty of Health & Social Sciences. [2-21]

The paper is Open Access and hence freely available to any newbie academic the world with internet access.

Early career STEM communicators: The Little Event online conference 2023

The Little Event is a training session for people who are new to STEM communication.

Whether you work in a science centre or museum, volunteer for a festival, are involved in university outreach, or do anything else to engage people with science, technology, engineering and maths.

The introductory sessions will focus on developing the different skills that are useful in STEM communication, and they are delivered by experienced science communicators.

The 2023 Little Event will be held online over two days and are designed to work together to be booked as a package.

The programme includes sessions on Evaluation, Managing Projects, Presenting, Science Capital, and Careers and will include plenty of networking time.

BU is a partner of The Conversation, a news analysis and opinion website with content written by academics working with professional journalists.

The training session will run by one of The Conversation’s editors and will take place from 2pm – 3pm over Zoom.

It is open to all BU academics and PhD candidates who are interested in finding out more about working with The Conversation.

Learn how to consider the news potential of your expertise, make your writing accessible and engaging to a diverse range of audiences, and pitch your ideas.

Why write for The Conversation?

The Conversation is a great way to share research and informed comment on topical issues. Academics work with editors to write pieces, which can then be republished via a creative commons license.

Following on from the successful pre Covid Research Leadership programme, (consistently rated 4+ out of 5), we are running a similar face to face programme in 2023. This programme supports the development of all academics including Early Career Researchers, Mid-Career Academics, Senior Research Leaders and Associate Professors.

Participants will :

Be helped to develop the necessary knowledge and skills to lead teams to successfully deliver funded research projects, in line with stakeholder and funder requirements.
Gain an understanding of effective team leadership and team working within a research context in order to be able to devise strategies to get the best out of teams in the challenging environment of research.
Be equipped with an understanding of their strengths and limitations in order to be confident in developing their leadership skills in line with their career stage and future aspirations and be more confident to expand their funded research activities.

Impact and Funding Bids workshop -Thursday 7th November

Writing about impact in a grant application can be challenging. However, a strong description of the benefits you hope your project will have on society and the economy, and the means you will take to get there, can make all the difference between getting funded or not.

The RKEDF online training session will help you understand what you need to include for the best chance of success and look at the different ways impact may be considered within each call.

Since the UKRI removed the Pathways to Impact sections of grant applications, they actually expect impact to be even more embedded within funding bids. So, how do you write about impact in grant applications? And what counts as impact?

This session is aimed at researchers at all stages of their careers but is likely to be especially useful for ECRs preparing their first funding bids.
