Cafe Scientifique 2 April – The last one standing: Journalism for science democratisation in the post-truth era

Café Scientifique takes place on the first Tuesday evening of the month at Café Boscanova

Enjoy listening to a short talk before engaging in debate and discussion around that topic

We’ll be joined by Associate Professor An Nguyen @anducnguyen on Tuesday 2 April from 7:30pm until 9pm (doors open at 6:30pm) No need to register, make sure you get there early though as seats fill up fast!

The last one standing: Journalism for science democratisation in the post-truth era

The recent increase in scientific discoveries not only offers hope for human fears and longings but also confronts fundamental aspects of life and long-accepted social and moral values. Without proper mechanisms for citizens of democratic societies to be meaningfully informed and to voice concerns over scientific advancements, they may find themselves stripped of the right to shape the science that shapes their lives. Ironically, the pace of science is too fast for citizens to follow, let alone have a voice. This talk first explores why science democratisation is the only way to tackle the growing science-society gap, which has been a catalyst for anti-intellectual and anti-science populist politics around the world. It will then examine why decades of ardent efforts by science institutions to close this gap have failed. Finally it will demonstrate why and how science journalism, despite its many faults, may be the last candidate to fulfil this task @CsJCC_BU

NIHR Programme Grants for Applied Research (PGfAR) Roadshow

We are offering a number of events which offer an opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the NIHR Programme Grants for Applied Research (PGfAR) and Programme Development Grant (PDG) funding streams.

Registration to these events will be FREE and refreshments will be provided.

The next event taking place in the South is in Exeter, Devon. 10 April 2019.

Places are limited and will be allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. In order to secure your place at our South West event in Exeter, please register using our online form by 1pm, 27 March 2019.

Researchers currently developing, or considering developing, a proposal for submission to PGfAR or PDG for funding are also invited to take advantage of a one to one session (subject to availability) with the NIHR Programme team and RDS staff to discuss their proposed study. To access this opportunity please complete the one to one booking form.

Staying Active and Independent for Longer (SAIL)

The SAIL project explores ways to keep us all healthier for longer as we age across four countries: the Netherlands, Belgium, France and the UK. The SAIL research team are working with local authorities, businesses, charities and older people to learn from experiences and to try out different strategies. This talk will give you an insight into the achievements of the SAIL project research so far and the opportunity to discuss ways in which you can stay active for longer.

13:40 – 14:30 – Professor Alan Breen – Back pain: Another way to look at it

Lower back pain is the largest cause of days lost to disability in the world and is felt at some point in the lives of around 80% of us. While the statistics are staggering, they are getting worse, with the majority of cases having no diagnosis, let alone a cure. Why is this condition so resistant to the personalised medical advances to which so many other disorders are gradually surrendering? This talk will review our knowledge of back pain as a socio-medical concept, visit the paradigms used to approach it and consider what is new in understanding its physical mechanisms.

14:50 – 15:40 – Dr Chris Stantis – The Hyksos Enigma: Researching the 15th Dynasty of Ancient Egypt

The Hyksos formed the 15th Dynasty, ruling Egypt between c.1650 – 1550 BCE. Their process of gaining power and historical impact is a mystery, as textual representation was largely destroyed when “true” Egyptians reclaimed power. With funding from the European Research Council, a collaborative multinational research programme has been established to investigate who these people were. This talk will explore the fascinating research being pursued to study this little-known period in Near Eastern history by examining tombs and cemeteries at their capital, and incorporating the use of cutting-edge chemical techniques on human remains.

15:45 – 16:35 – Dr Ellen Seiss – The effect of emotion on cognition: What can we learn from those with obsessive-compulsive disorders?

Our emotions influence a lot of our everyday cognitions, for example how we tend to certain situations, how we memorise information and how we make decisions. This emotional effect is more pronounced in people living with anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorders. Those affected often try to avoid ‘harmful’ events with ritualised behaviours; such as checking doors, lights, or extreme cleanliness rituals. This talk will give you a brief insight into how emotions alter attention, memory and decision-making in those with obsessive-compulsive disorders.

BU Systematic Review Masterclass starting tomorrow

Looking forward to our annual Systematic Review Masterclass at Bournemouth University which will be starting tomorrow February 14th. This year for the first time we have renamed it a ‘Systematic Review to Inform Clinical Practice’ as it is not only a free-standing masterclass but also a level 7 unit of Continuing Professional Development and Training . This year we aim to provide students with the opportunity to choose an area of interest and undertake an in-depth, independent study in the form of a systematic review, focusing on a negotiated aspect of clinical practice. Prof. Vanora Hundley and I had published over twenty systematic reviews (or papers about systematic reviewing) over the past two decades. [1-21] The unit will have input from BU’s Academic Liaison Librarian, Caspian Dugdale, and BU academics such as Dr. Bibha Simkhada, Lecturer in Nursing.

Southern Health Research and Development Conference 2019

‘Population Health: Can Research Improve Outcomes’

Southern Health Research & Development will be holding the above conference on Wednesday 30th January, at the Hilton, Ageas Bowl in Southampton.

The conference is free and will feature a range of guest speakers focusing on research’s impact on population health and how this can not only improve the health of the population but also reduce health inequalities across diverse population groups. The programme for the day can be found here.

The BASES conference 2018✔

The BASES conference 2018 took place on 27-28 November at Harrogate Convention Centre.

Thanks to my supervisors Professor McConnell, Dr Gavin and Professor Wainwright and with the support from Bournemouth University I had the possibility to present my research titled: The effects of 8 weeks of inspiratory muscle training on the balance of healthy older people: a randomised, double-blind, placebo controlled trial. Figure 1.

You can now read what happened and look at the media from the conference clicking the twitter button right below.

Personally, I found extremely interesting the talk of Professor Steven N Blair, Professor Ken Fox and Professor John Buckley (Figure 2).

They explained, thought direct experiences, how sports science has evolved and what we (including physiologists, kinesiologists, strength and conditioning coaches) should consider when developing research proposals. One of the many take-home points was that sports science is today considered science for/of health and that is crucial to seek collaboration between researchers and the community. Paraphrasing a famous quote from J.R.R. Tolkien, it is from the ordinary folks that research questions arise.

Concluding, it was a motivating experience, and I was pleased to receive many questions about my research. Definitely, a conference worth to consider also for the next year.

Good Clinical Practice refresher – Monday 12th November

Are you currently undertaking research within the NHS and your Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training is due to expire? Or has it expired recently?

GCP certification lasts for two years, so if your training is due to expire, has expired, or you want to validate your learning, then take advantage of the upcoming refresher half day session, taking place at Poole Hospital on Monday 12th November, 9am – 12:30pm.

In February 2018 I was invited by Artercitya on a (still on-going) residency as an audio artist in a very large international project called Freiraum, organised by the Goethe-Institut and funded, amongst other important funders, by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union. In the project, 38 cities in Europe, are dealing with the question of freedom in Europe today and consider where or how this freedom might be in danger.

Co-creation

My involvement in the project, engaged Artecitya and ArtBOX (a big Creative Arts Management company) with my work as an educator here at Bournemouth University. They became particularly interested in the Graduate Production work created by our Level 6 students in the BA Media Production Course and particularly in the Graduate Production Project Unit, which I lead.

During the unit, ArtBOX, who organise the 3rd Artecitya Art Science Technology Festival – THE NEW NEW, realised by the Thessaloniki International Fair – HELEXPO, with the support of the Creative Europe programme of the European Union, came to the university and students had a chance to present to them prototypes of their graduate production work.

As a result, two of our BAMP Level 6 graduating students and my own supervisees, Daniel Bell and George Fisher, whose work fulfilled the brief of this new media arts event, were selected and presented their work, along with mine, in this major international exhibition, THE NEW NEW, in Thessaloniki –Greece between September 8 -16 2018.

The three artworks, Daniel Bell’s Spectra, George Fisher’s Echoes in Space and my own Air Free, were very warmly received by the visitors and first survey results from the even organisers suggest that the work was seen by over 10.000 people and that the exhibition was voted amongst the most popular events in this major international fair.

Echoes in Space – George Fisher

Echoes in Space consists of 8 unique soundscapes and visuals themed after each of the planets’ characteristics. These soundscapes are an artistic reimagining of the Voyager probes recordings, though scattered throughout are real excerpts from the original Voyager recordings. Echoes in Space is a blurring of reality and crafted content; it asks the viewer to consider the divide between reality and fiction. As well as to understand the difficulty in comprehending what is real and what is crafted when you find yourself confronted by the unknown, and to ask oneself if there truly is a difference?

Spectra – Daniel Bell

Spectra is an audio-visual installation focusing on the contrast and convergence between the human and natural worlds. Stemming from the artists philosophy that every new concept we face in life comes to us as a spectrum of information, and to fully comprehend new concepts we must appreciate each spectra in their entirety

Air Free Future

The first iteration of my artwork Air Free that was presented in Greece, is made up of interviews with members of local communities in Thessaloniki, responding to questions on isolation and freedom. As a response to the Freiraum brief, the artwork is now entering a second phase. During this phase, I will be visiting Carlisle (UK) in order to conduct further recordings with members of the local community there on the same themes, by bringing the recordings from Greece to them. These new recordings will then be used along with the recordings from Thessaloniki in a second iteration of the artwork, which will be presented in an exhibition organised by the Goethe-Institut in Berlin Germany, between 12-13 March 2019.

Air Free Impact

My own work for Freiraum, due to its themes and very large scale international reach, lends itself rather strongly for an impact study, which I am now working on. Particularly looking at how the work brings forth issues of isolation in Europe today by bringing the voices of local communities, including the voices of minorities, in communication with each other as well as with international audiences.

Human beings are evolutionary shaped social animals. We often play and work together either independently or aiming at common goals. Have you ever wondered, when we are engaged in group activities, whether we perform everyday tasks in the same way as we do them alone? Recent findings in psychology showed that one person’s cognition and behaviour (such as attention, memory, perception, and action) can be shaped by another person who performs similar tasks in the same environment. But the answer to the question is more complicated than a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’. This talk will introduce these findings and explain the theories behind the phenomena. You will see psychological experiments in action and be engaged with some tests and discussions.

Facing our future self

One in five people alive today will reach their 100th birthday. You are going to grow old but have you thought about it? Ageing is a taboo subject and older people are often stereotyped and overlooked. Dr Curie Scott invited people over 60 and students from Health & Social Care professional courses to four drawing workshops. Come and hear how drawing about ageing made a startling difference to their current lives. In terms of ageing, we cannot separate ourselves from our future older self, however much we want to do so. ‘They’ are the ‘we’ of the future.

Horizon 2020 news and upcoming events – September 2018

MSCA Individual Fellowships 2018 Call Submission Rates

According to UKRO, the European Commission has released the submission rates for the 2018 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Individual Fellowships (IF) call, which closed on 12 September; a total of 9,830 proposals were submitted.

This represents a slight increase in comparison to the previous MSCA IF call under Horizon 2020 in 2017, which received 9,089 proposals. The results can be expected by mid-February 2019.

Open registration for MSCA Innovative Training Networks UK Information Events

UKRO in it’s capacity as National Contact Point for the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) will hold two free information days focussing on the 2019 MSCA Innovative Training Networks (ITN) call for proposals (deadline for the submission of applications on 15 January 2019). Registration can be accessed through the following links: Wednesday 10 October, London; Friday 12 October, York.

Participation in the events is free, but registration is mandatory for attendance; places will be offered on a first come first served basis.

Open registration for Societal Challenge 6 Information Day

An information and brokerage event for the Horizon 2020 Societal Challenge 6: ‘Europe in a changing world – Inclusive, innovative and reflective societies’ will take place in Warsaw, Poland on 8 November. It is organised by the European Commission (DG RTD) and Net4Society, a network of SC6 National Contacts Points.

The event is free of charge but limited to 2 persons representing the same department/organization. Online registration is obligatory.

EU Partnering event on the use of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence for monitoring health status and quality of life after cancer treatment

Academics are invited to submit an expression of interest to participate in this partnering event.

The aim of the event is to foster and facilitate the development of R&D project consortia for Horizon 2020 EU funded projects in the Healthtech themes. The event is aimed to provide a platform for new commercial and technological collaborations, especially between business and research organisations.

Open registration for UKRO Annual Visit to BU

RKEO will host annual UK Research Office visit to BU on 10th October 2018. The event will take place in FG06 seminar room with the sessions for BU academics commencing at 11:30.

Responsible online gambling seminar Friday 14 September

Three national gambling addiction campaigners will be speaking at a seminar this Friday (14th), organised by the university’s EROGamb project (Enabling Responsible Online Gambling), led by Dr Raian Ali. Terry White and Josephine and Peter Holloway will share their powerful, personal stories about the effects gambling addiction can have on gamblers and their families.

EROGamb team members will also present recent results about gamblers and the gambling industry’s perception of EROGamb, as well as the current status of responsible gambling when people play online slot games for real money.

Conference on Women Entrepreneurs and Innovators: Contemporary insights from Research and Practice

On 18th July, the conference titled “Women Entrepreneurs and Innovators- Contemporary Insights from Research and Practice” was held at the Talbot Campus. The conference brought together academics, entrepreneurs, professionals, and students to discuss cutting edge insights from theory and practice of women entrepreneurship.

The day started with Dr Mili Shrivastava, organiser of the conference, highlighting the importance of women entrepreneurship and introducing the speakers. The first speaker was Professor Claire Leitch from Lancaster University. Prof Leitch is the editor of International Small Business Journal, a leading entrepreneurship field Journal. She presented her work on women entrepreneurship as a gendered niche and its implications for regional development policy. Following this stimulating talk emphasizing the role of geography for women entrepreneurship, Professor Helen Lawton Smith from University of London, discussed academic women entrepreneurs and research commercialisation by them at UK Universities. The third speaker was Erin Thomas Wang, founder of Makingmumpreneurs. com. She shared unique perspectives from her start- up journey.

In the afternoon session, Professor Lynn Martin, an academic entrepreneur from Angela Ruskin University, discussed her perspectives on women entrepreneurship from both research and practice. Following her talk, Dr Mili Shrivastava presented contemporary insights from her project with Gabriel Glixelli on women entrepreneurs in High technology industries. Finally, Ms Sarah Veakins, Marketing advisor of Outset, a government organisation advocating women enterprise talked about her experiences in supporting women entrepreneurs in the region and her perspectives on starting-up.

The Conference organically developed into a forum for compelling discussion on various aspects of women innovation and entrepreneurship such as gender, society, regional context and role of education that emerged throughout the day. It became an innovative setting for stimulating discussion on cutting-edge research and practice of women entrepreneurship and innovation with entrepreneurs and academics coming together for an insightful and enriching day.

Successful Midwifery Education conference at BU

In the first week of July Bournemouth University ran its second international midwifery education conference in the Executive Business Centre. This year’s conference was called ‘What works in midwifery education? A conference run by midwifery educators for midwifery educators.’ CMMPH (Centre for Midwifery, Maternal & Perinatal Health) brought together nearly 100 delegates on Thursday and Friday (July 5-6). There were presentations and posters from midwifery educators based in in all four countries of the UK, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and Australia, resulting in lively stimulating debates.

The conference organisers has teamed up with the leading scientific journal in the field Midwifery (published by Elsevier). To coincide with BU’s conference Midwifery published this month its special issue on Midwifery Education. This special issue was introduced at the conference by Dutch midwife Dr. Ans Luyben, one of the special issue’s editors.

The conference awarded two prizes for the best poster. One prize was for the best academic poster and one voted by the conference audience. The former prize was won by a poster from NHS Education for Scotland. The public’s poster prize was won by a poster from the University of Bradford jointly produced by film students and student midwives.

The main conference organisers Dr. Catherine Angell and Dr. Sue Way from CMMPH said afterwards that the success of the conference means that CMMPH will organise a third midwifery education conference run for and by educators in three years’ time.
