Medical Research Council

Public Health Intervention Development scheme (PHIND) supports the early stages of development of interventions that address an important UK or global public health issues; in particular non-healthcare settings with population level interventions.  Up to £180k is available for projects lasting up to 18 months.  Closing Date 12/7/16

The Royal Society

The Royal Society Research Grants scheme provide grants up to £15k for scientists in the UK who are in the early stage of their careers.  Closing Date 1/6/16

The International Exchanges schemes have available up to £12k (and an additional £2k for research expenses if applicable) for new collaborations between scientists in the UK and overseas.  The closing dates for the three schemes are as follows- Standard Programme Closing Date 7/6/16.  France Cost Share Scheme Closing Date 10/6/16. Kan Tong Po Visiting Fellowships Programme Closing Date 7/6/16

University of London

The School of Advanced Studies at the University of London is inviting participants to take part in the Being Human Festival run in Partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy.  Up to £5k is available to run 5-10 events as Being Human ‘Festival Hubs’.  Closing Date 16/5/16

Biotechnology YES 2016 is open for applications

Biotechnology YES is an innovative competition giving early career researchers from diverse backgrounds a practical insight into how to commercialise research and recognise the benefits of industrial collaboration, providing a springboard for their own career development into a multitude of sectors. The competition is delivered in partnership, funded by sponsorship,  draws on expertise from industry and the research community and aims to encourage an entrepreneurial culture in the UK postgraduate and postdoctoral base for the benefit of the UK economy.

The challenge for participants is to prepare an oral business plan presentation, in a team of four or five, for a hypothetical bioscience start-up company seeking equity investment. The plan is based on a plausible idea based on real markets and developed over the course of a three day residential workshop. The workshop encompasses presentations and mentoring sessions from leading figures in industry who give their time and advice for free. It culminates in the presentation of business plans to a panel of ‘equity investors’. These individuals come from industry and academia and have decades of experience and proven track records of professional success. Winners from the regional workshops progress to the final held in December.

Workshop dates will be posted on the Biotechnology YES and BBSRC websites once finalised and and include Syngenta, GSK and Unilever .

The competition is open to all bioscience researchers registered at a UK university not just those funded by BBSRC. However, if any of the workshops oversubscribed, Research Council funded researchers will be given priority.

Innovate UK   have just published the 2016/17 Delivery Plan. In it, you will discover some important changes in the way  they intend to support business innovation.

Key areas of the delivery plan include:

  • a new sector focus – that is easier for industry, investors and government to work with
  • changing the frequency and nature of our sector funding competitions – so that they are broader in scope than previously and form a single stream of innovation funding
  • forming a single ‘open’ funding programme –  for applications from any technology or sector
  • enhancing the role of our innovation networks – in providing guidance and support to innovative businesses both nationally and regionally

Economic and Social Research Council

The Centre for Climate Change Economics and Policy (CCCEP), part of the ESRC, has announced an Innovation Fund to encourage innovative ideas on climate policy from practitioner and researcher communities.  Applications may address climate change mitigation or adaption within any stage of the policy process.  Up to £50k is available and the CCCEP is looking to make five awards.  Closing Date 30/6/16

Innovate UK

Innovate UK has announced round 4 early stage (technical feasibility), mid stage (technology development) and  late stage (pre-commercial technology validation) Energy Catalyst awards.  The aim is to develop and prove techologies that will help to solve elements of issues related to low carbon, security of supply and affordability.  The deadline for registration is noon 8/6/16; expressions of interest must be submitted by noon 15/6/16.

Natural Environment Research Council

As part of the Ecosystem Services for Poverty Alleviation (ESPA) Regional Opportunities Fund (ROF), applications are invited for up to £50k to help ESPA projects enhance the impact of their research. Closing Date 13/5/16

CASE studentships (Collaborative awards in science and engineering) have been announced. These studentships can be conducted in collaboration with non-academic partners. Closing Date 7/7/16

Wellcome Trust

The Wellcome Trust has made available Research Awards for Health Professionals who wish to transition to a period of research in any area of human or animal health.  The scheme can also be used to enrol onto a PhD for those who have little or no social science experience. Awards will not normally exceed £250k.  Individuals holding permanent academic posts are not eligible for these fellowships. Preliminary application Closing Dates 6/7/16

There are also Research Fellowships lasting up to three years for humanities and social science scholars not in an established post who wish to undertake research in human and animal health.  The fellowships provide research and salary expenses.  Preliminary application Closing Date 6/7/16

University Awards are available to recruit and support humanities and social science research staff working in any area of human and animal health for up to five years.  Preliminary application Closing Date 6/7/16

Investigator Awards in the Humanities and Social Science are available to exceptional researchers exploring any aspect of human and animal health.  Awards are for up to five years with ranged funds available for £100k-£200k per annum.  Preliminary application Closing Date 8/7/16

Development Awards (Broadcast, Games and Film) awards up to £10k for one year support the development of TV, radio games or film projects that engage with biomedical science and its impact on our lives. Closing Date Open

Horizon 2020 Secure Societies Societal Challenge (SEREN3), Brussels

My journey to the Horizon 2020 event in Brussels (secure society) started when my colleague Ehren brought the event to my attention and suggested it is one I should attend. In between doing other things I committed to go and decided to take one of my research students who works in a related area to mine. The earlier Brussels attacks didn’t change my mind, or her’s, and in fact made it so more important that we should attend the event given its nature – secure society. Despite all her best efforts, including taking an 18 hour bus journey to Manchester and back to apply for her visa, her visa didn’t arrive on time, and here it I was on my way to Brussels, taking the 3.00 am bus to Waterloo and then the Eurostar from St Pancras to Brussels. Quiet streets of London early at 5 am meant I met a couple of unwanted friendly rats who accompanied me from Victoria coach station to Victoria underground station, where I saw some more  of them fighting on the rail. Travel to Brussels was quick and I got in to the city centre at 11.00 am and headed for the meeting venue where it started at 1.30 pm.

The meeting in the afternoon was excellent, they had a number of speakers from the Deputy Head of Horizon, to the call coordinator, legal, finance, ethic support etc. Each one went to into great detail and explained all one needs to know about applying for the Horizon bids in general.  The meeting was extremely well organised and it was disappointing to see such a large number of participants failing to attend, ironic that the strand was for a secure society and yet we are failing to take our part. I left the meeting at 6.00 pm and managed to look around ‘military Brussels’, witnessing some of the lost freedom in the capital of Europe, taken by those who used the liberal democracy of Europe to attack it from within.

The Wednesday morning sessions could not have been better, the EU Horizon 2020 professionals, went through each bid call, one by one, and explained all the criteria and the do’s and don’ts when bidding. There were a number of opportunities to ask questions regarding the bids and the time available for the presentations for attendees to pitch to secure suitable partners. They laid on a wonderful lunch which was served to us and in the afternoon there were further opportunities for one-to-one speed dating with other attendees.

Attendance at the meeting in the Sheraton hotel was free, and one of the best organised meetings I have ever attended. I left Brussels having learned a great a deal in terms of EU bidding activities, details regarding my selected bids and a number of business cards from colleagues across Europe and beyond. It was a brilliant opportunity to put faces to names and more importantly to listen to professionals talk – all in all it was an absolute eye opener and invaluable training for bidding! Thank you Ehren and Jacqui for making this happen, Thank you Seren3brussels2016 for such a wonderful training sessions and great hospitality!

Innovate UK launch new delivery plan – key sectors and funding opportunties included

Innovate UK have launched their delivery plan for 2016/17 .

This  includes:

  • a new sector focus that is easier for industry, investors and government to work with
  • a 5-point plan to underpin activity across these sectors and drive productivity growth
  • clearer funding programmes that are easier to navigate
  • improvements to the way Innovate UK connects businesses to knowledge and partners
  • a stronger regional presence

With evidence of :”focusing ever more closely on scaling up SMEs” …

Clearer sector support has been established and these include four groups:

  • emerging and enabling technologies
  • health and life sciences
  • infrastructure systems
  • manufacturing and materials

Funding competitions for businesses are also to be simplified.

There will be 2 broad funding competitions covering each sector group per year, and 2 open competitions for applications from any sector or technology area. There will be other programmes and competitions in partnership with other government organisations.

British Academy Small Grants next call

british_academy_logoThe British Academy have informed us that the next round of BA/Leverhulme Small Research Grants is now open and will be closing at 5pm on Wednesday 11th May.

They have written to us to say that during the last round they received a large number of applications (UK wide) with obvious errors that should not have been approved by the employing institutions.  They’ve provided updated BA scheme notes for applicants and BA FAQs which are also available on e-GAP and have asked that all applicants read the documentation carefully before starting their application.  BA receive 900-1,000 applications for each round of this competition and so will not correct errors but will instead withdraw the application from the competition.

If you’re interested in applying to this call then please inform your Funding Development Officer by 13th April.  We usually have a high demand for this call and so we will need to ensure that we have scheduled you in for costings and approvals, particularly as BA require RKEO to check your application and to electronically submit it on your behalf.  Therefore, the BU internal deadline for this call is 4th May.

VOOM 2016: Pitch to Richard Branson to win a share of £1M in prizes

VOOM 2016 takes place over 14 weeks, including a huge public vote, a 29-hour Pitchathon (a Guinness World Records attempt, in fact), and a series of competitive face-to-face workshops.

Competition finalists will have the opportunity to pitch to Richard Branson and the six winning businesses will share over £1 million (€1.2 million) in prizes, plus additional support.

There are two categories:

  • START-UP – aimed at early stage start-up businesses
  • GROW – for businesses with revenue that are looking to grow

The winner of each category will receive social and PR support, a broadband and telecoms package, a carriage wrap on Virgin Trains, mentoring, financial advice, a £50,000 (€60,000) cash prize and much more. There are also prize packages for four runners up.

Crowdfunder are offering you the chance to run a crowdfunding campaign on top of (and as an integral part of) your competition entry. So while you are working hard to secure public support for your entry, you could also raise money at the same time.

The competition also allows you to put yourself forward for awards within your category:

  • The Impact Award – for businesses that put social and environmental impact, as well as profit, at the heart of their business
  • The Great Award – for businesses that fly the flag for Great Britain
  • The Crowdfunder Award – for those businesses that run a crowdfunding campaign in parallel with their competition entry

Global Resilience Partnership

Concept notes are welcomed for the Global Resilience Challenge’s “Water Window”.  This fund offers between $250k-$1m USD in grants for teams offering innovative solutions to issues affecting flood prone communities across the Sahel, the Horn of Africa, and South and Southeast Asia. Closing Date 8/5/16

Scottish Government

The Scottish Government have announced a tender opportunity related to “ Monitoring the environmental outcomes delivered by the 2014-20 SRDP Agri-Environment Climate Scheme“. Tenders are expected to be in the range of £250k-300k. Closing Date 26/4/16 at 12:00

NERC

Improving Health with Environmental Data

NERC, the Medical Research Council (MRC) and the Scottish Government Chief Scientist Office (CSO) are investing up to £600,000 in projects to identify and fill knowledge gaps around the potential of environmental data to improve health outcomes in the UK. This call will focus specifically on using environmental data on air pollution and/or environmental hazards alongside health and biomedical data.

Maximum Award: £60,000 Deadline: 18 April 2016 for application to attend brokerage event on 10 May 2016, full proposal by 12 July 2016

AHRC

Leadership Fellows scheme – ECRs

The AHRC’s Leadership Fellows scheme provides time for research leaders, or potential future research leaders, to undertake focused individual research alongside collaborative activities which have the potential to generate a transformative impact on their subject area and beyond.

Maximum Award: £50,000 – £250,000 Deadline: Open

Directorate-General for Humanitarian Aid & Civil Protection, EU

Buffer capacities for addressing temporary shortcomings in extraordinary disasters

This programme opens the possibility for financial assistance to make available capacities additional to Participating States’ existing capacities (hereafter “buffer capacities”), which would contribute to addressing temporary shortcomings of response capacities in extraordinary disaster situations.

ERA-Net Sumforest, EU

Sustainable forests for the society of the future

The present call for proposals focuses on basic and applied research that aims to support policy decisions regarding multifunctional forestry. Proposals are expected to be transnational, and innovative forms of cooperation such as interdisciplinarity are encouraged.

Engaging civil society in pan-African issues

Small modular reactors competition, phase 1

The Department of Energy and Climate Change under the nuclear research and development programme invites expressions of interest for its small modular reactors competition – phase one. This call aims to gauge market interest among technology developers, utilities, potential investors and funders in developing, commercialising and financing small modular reactors in the UK.

European Society of Cardiology

Research prize in acute cardiovascular care

The European Society of Cardiology’s Acute Cardiovascular Care Association invites applications for its research prize in acute cardiovascular care. This recognises unpublished research in the area of acute cardiovascular care applied to the development of novel therapeutic, diagnostic and logistical strategies to improve patient care and long-term outcomes. There are three categories for submission:

  • clinical outcomes;
  • quality of care;
  • translational.

Irish Marine Institute

Marine Socio-economics

The Marine Institute is pleased to invite Project-Based Award applications from academic institutions under the Research Programme Marine Socio-Economics for a project titled “Valuing and understanding the dynamics of Ireland’s Ocean Economy“.

The project aims to strengthen the valuation and understanding of Ireland’s ocean economy, ensuring the timely availability of marine economic statistics, providing an evidence–base for policy and decision-making, economic forecasting and scenario planning.

Research-Professional-logoEvery BU academic has a Research Professional account which delivers weekly emails detailing funding opportunities in their broad subject area. To really make the most of your Research Professional account, you should tailor it further by establishing additional alerts based on your specific area of expertise. The Funding Development Team Officers can assist you with this, if required.

Research Professional have created several guides to help introduce users to ResearchProfessional. These can be downloaded here.

Quick Start Guide: Explains to users their first steps with the website, from creating an account to searching for content and setting up email alerts, all in the space of a single page.

User Guide: More detailed information covering all the key aspects of using ResearchProfessional.

Administrator Guide: A detailed description of the administrator functionality.

Research Professional are running a series of online training broadcasts aimed at introducing users to the basics of creating and configuring their accounts on ResearchProfessional. They are holding monthly sessions, covering everything you need to get started with ResearchProfessional. The broadcast sessions will run for no more than 60 minutes, with the opportunity to ask questions via text chat. Each session will cover:

  • Self registration and logging in
  • Building searches
  • Setting personalised alerts
  • Saving and bookmarking items
  • Subscribing to news alerts
  • Configuring your personal profile

Each session will run between 10.00am and 11.00am (UK) on the fuorth Tuesday of each month. You can register here for your preferred date:

Have a look to see what calls are coming up in the research councils, the EC, NIHR, British Academy, Royal Society, Leverhulme Trust, Wellcome Trust, and Innovate UK.  If you’re unfamiliar with some of these funders’ then you can find their strategic and delivery plans, what they fund, success rate data, impact guidance, call deadlines and much more in the Research Funders’ Guide.

NERC standard grants (July deadline) – internal competition launched

NERC

 

NERC introduced demand management measures in 2012. These were revised in 2015 to reduce the number and size of applications from research organisations for NERC’s discovery science standard grant scheme. Full details can be found in the BU policy document for NERC demand management measures at I:\R&KEO\Public\NERC demand management 2016.

As at March 2015, BU has been capped at one application per standard grant round. The measures only apply to NERC standard grants (including new investigators). An application counts towards an organisation, where the organisation is applying as the grant holding organisation (of the lead or component grant). This will be the organisation of the Principal Investigator of the lead or component grant.

BU process

As a result, BU has introduced a process for determining which application will be submitted to each NERC Standard Grant round. This will take the form of an internal competition, which will include peer review. The next available standard grant round is July 2016. The process for selecting an application for this round can be found in the process document in I:\R&KEO\Public\NERC demand management 2016 – the deadline for internal Expressions of Interest which will be used to determine which application will be submitted is 8th April 2016.

NERC have advised that where a research organisation submits more applications to any round than allowed under the cap, NERC will office-reject any excess applications, based purely on the time of submission through the Je-S system (last submitted = first rejected). However, as RKEO submit applications through Je-S on behalf of applicants, RKEO will not submit any applications that do not have prior agreement from the internal competition.

Appeals process

If an EoI is not selected to be submitted as an application, the Principal Investigator can appeal to Professor Tim McIntyre-Bhatty, Deputy Vice-Chancellor. Any appeals must be submitted within ten working days of the original decision. All appeals will be considered within ten working days of receipt.

Research Professional is a search engine designed to help researchers find potential funding calls, keep researchers up to date with developments in the higher education sector and can bring researchers together to compete for a funding call.
