Why not get involved in the British Science Festival 2016?

The call for event proposals and Award Lecture nominations for the British Science Festival 2016 are now open.

The British Science Festival is Europe’s longest-standing national event which connects people with scientists, engineers, technologists and social scientists. Tens of thousands of people come together to celebrate the latest developments in science and to engage in open discussion about issues that affect our culture and society.

Each September the British Science Festival transforms a different UK city into a vibrant celebration of science, engineering and technology.

The British Science Festival will be returning to Swansea University from 6-9 September 2016. The Festival is a national platform to showcase cutting-edge science, celebrate the latest scientific developments and engage in open discussion about issues that affect our culture and society.

The British Science Association needs your help to curate a vibrant programme of events. Proposals should be aimed at non-specialist adults with a broad interest in science. Find out how to submit an event and nominate an Award Lecture on the British Science Festival website here: http://www.britishscienceassociation.org/british-science-festival

Specifically, they are looking for original, high quality science entertainments events for a wide range of audiences, including families, children, young adults, special interest groups and followers of the arts.

Trips to places of interest in the local area
Behind the scenes tours
Science shows

Anyone can propose an event – individuals, researchers, organisations or academic institutions from all over the UK. Events can be talks, debates or discussions for a public audience.

The call for proposals will close on 25 March 2016 and the deadline for Award Lecture nominations is 4 March 2016.

BU roadmap development workshop on digital healthcare technology

Twenty three academics and two colleagues from an SME came together in a work shop organised by Professor Hongnian Yu, Professor Tamas Hickish and Dr Carol Clark. The aim of the workshop was for colleagues to share their knowledge, expertise and experiences in the field of Digital technology.

Digital technology is transforming healthcare and there is a need for interdisciplinary teams at both local, national and international levels to collaborate in order to realise potential. At Bournemouth University leadership in digital healthcare technology is diluted by multiple groupings and departments associated with this strength. Therefore the aims of the workshop were to create a roadmap of research to integrate BU expertise and capacity. The aim was to capture envisioned future research requirements and act as a foundation for future research proposal development. Additionally, the workshop was to establish connections between the participating researchers and scope possible future research collaborations.

Ethnographies of West Howe: student research projects and community collaboration

Over the past few weeks, students on BA Sociology and Anthropology (Faculty of Health and Social Sciences at BU) have been carrying out ethnographic studies in West Howe, Bournemouth. As part of a focus on expanding undergraduate opportunities to conduct first hand research, students have designed their research projects collaboratively with local groups and organisations based in West Howe.

A short drive from Talbot campus, West Howe comprises a large post-war council estate, and faces a number of contemporary challenges in terms of employment, education, health and well being. It is also a green, spacious and welcoming community, with many active local initiatives aiming to improve quality of life for people in the area. Some aspects of its pre-World War Two history as a rural farming community remain present in its contemporary physical environment, combining with the modernist 1950s vision of suburban public space expressed in the architecture and street design. Local people’s experiences of the transition of the area from a largely rural hamlet to a modern housing estate, involving rapid population increase and large scale construction, was captured beautifully in two oral history books published in the 1980s – West Howe Proper and West Howe Too!

From an early point in their research projects, BU students invested time in building relationships with people in West Howe, working collaboratively with local schools, churches, children’s centres and volunteer groups to identify their key research questions, think through issues of research ethics, and use appropriate methods to gather relevant data, including participant observation, interviews, surveys and focus groups. Many student projects were inspired by the activities of local organisations, residents and volunteers, and the possibilities of engaged ethnography to produce findings that are locally useful and make a difference to people’s lives.

Next Thursday 3rd December students will be presenting their research findings to the community and inviting their engagement, comment and discussion. Themes of the research projects include: primary school education, children’s play and recreation, access to employment, perceptions of addiction, wellbeing and social support, social mobility and transport. CEMP hosting AHRC Seminar and 10 year celebration

Both CEMP and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) are ten years old and to celebrate, we have two events on Thursday 3rd December at BU.

The first is an AHRC Network event, entitled ‘Access to the cultural industries: education and training’. This will be convened by Prof. Kate Oakley (Leeds University) and Dr. Bridget Conor (Kings College, London). The event will also feature Mark Banks (University of Leicester), Tamsyn Dent (Bournemouth University), Jacqueline McManus (University of the Arts, London) and David Buckingham (Loughborough University).

Following on from this is ‘CEMP10’, our celebration of a decade of education research, scholarship and CPD in the Faculty, and will feature some of the people who have been part of the CEMP ‘story’ over that time. CEMP Fellow, Matt Locke (Storythings) will give a keynote address and Pete Fraser’s Legendary Media Quiz will follow on afterwards.

AHRC Network: Improving Cultural Work (ICW) ‘Access to the cultural industries: education and training’ 2-5pm.

The ICW series of seminars have been set up by Professor Kate Oakley (Leeds University) and Dr Bridget Conor (Kings College London) to address a major issue of current public policy concern; namely the exclusions and inequalities manifest in cultural labour markets. Its core aim is to help inform policy in this field and the development of guidelines, advocacy material and expert advice on both the sources of exclusion and inequality, and the ways in which they might be addressed. It brings academics together with public policy makers, trade unions, employers and activists to explore these issues.

This fourth session in the seminar series will take place at Bournemouth University in collaboration with CEMP, the Centre of Excellence in Media Practice. This session will look at routes into employment in the cultural industries whether via higher or further education, training or apprenticeship. In keeping with the seminar series overall, the focus is on inequality and we will thus consider the role of education and training in both perpetuating and combatting inequality and exclusion in these industries.

‘Making Malnutrition Matter’ at Food Matters Live 2015

Last week Dr Jane Murphy was invited to participate in a Panel discussion at the national ‘Food Matters Live’ at the ExCel , London on the highly topical issue of ‘Making Malnutrition Matter’. The panel session was chaired by Justin Webb from the BBC Radio 4 Today programme who proficiently handled a great discussion on this ever increasing problem in the UK today. Malnutrition is a common clinical and public health problem in the UK, affecting more than three million people in England and Wales and about one in 10 people over 65 are now malnourished. 93% of these people live in the community resulting in 60% of carers worrying about the nutrition of the person they care for.

Jane was joined by other leading experts from industry and practice and discussed how the challenge of malnutrition can be addressed, ways to increase awareness of the problem and action across all community settings and solutions through multi-stakeholder approaches.

Bournemouth University also had a stand at the event which offered a great opportunity to raise the profile of our research and nutrition programmes at BU. Some of our undergraduate and postgraduate students attended this key annual event and engaged with a range of people including health and nutrition professionals, academics, food and drink manufacturers and professional bodies.

PR evaluation – linking research and practice

The need to link organisational objectives with communication strategy was the message that Professor Tom Watson of the Faculty of Media & Communication took to a Cambridge conference this week.

“Too often, communication activity is seen as a functional activity of organisations, whereas it should be at the core. All organisations are communicators and so they should involve communication expertise in the formation of objectives and strategies, not as a downstream message delivery activity.”

Professor Watson was speaking to the East Anglia conference of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR), which is the lead professional body for PR in the UK. He based his presentation on research into public relations measurement and evaluation which was a BU Impact Case Study in REF 2014.

“All research on communication effectiveness and the creation of value from communication demonstrates that the closer communicators are to organisational goal-setting and performance management, the better the results in terms of reputation, business and engagement with stakeholders,” he said.

CIPPM Project Copyrightuser.org wins AHRC Research in Film Award

An animated film on Copyrightuser.org titled The Adventure of the Girl with the Light Blue Hair won an AHRC Research in Film Award on 12 November 2015 at an Awards Ceremony hosted at the British Film Institute, Southbank London.

Copyrightuser.org is an online resource, which makes copyright law accessible to creators, teachers, students and members of the public. The project began with Bournemouth University’s Fusion Investment Fund in 2012 after which, the project has been successfully funded by RCUK/AHRC since 2013.

It is a collaborative project carried out by the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy and Management (CIPPM) Bournemouth University and CREATe, University of Glasgow.

The animated film was short-listed for the AHRC 10^th Anniversary Research in Film Award within the category Award for Innovation in Film – Best Film in the Year and beat another four contenders to win the award.

The panel of judges – consisting of industry and academic experts such as film director Beeban Kidron, Financial Times Arts Editor Jan Dalley, and actor and producer Diana Quick – described the film as “a well-constructed, quality animation addressing issues of creativity, IP and copyright for schools and undergraduates: lively, engaging, witty (à la Sherlock Holmes mode), informative and educating at the same time.”

The Adventure of the Girl with the Light Blue Hair is the first episode of The Game is On!, web series and is produced by Mr. Bartolomeo Meletti (CREATe, University of Glasgow) and Professor Ronan Deazley (Queens University Belfast). The film draws inspiration from Sherlock Holmes and other well-known copyright and public domain works and provides a springboard for exploring various copyright concepts.

It forms part of a suite of online learning materials for students and teachers in the UK while educating the wider public about what can and cannot be done with copyright works. To achieve this aim, researchers working on Copyrightuser.org produced both video and textual material.

The animated film is enhanced by 12 ‘Case Files’ authored by Ms. Hayleigh Bosher and Dr. Dinusha Mendis (CIPPM, Bournemouth University), which draws on the various elements of the film to explore key principles and ideas underpinning copyright law, creativity, and the limits of lawful appropriation and reuse.

The educational materials also include Copyright for A Level Media Studies authored by Ms. Hayleigh Bosher and Dr. Dinusha Mendis (CIPPM, Bournemouth University) – an educational web resource which addresses the AS/A Level Unit Critical Perspectives in Media, Section B: Contemporary Media Issues.

The AHRC Research in Film Awards is designed to recognise the creative and innovative work being undertaken at the interface between research and film. All the winners and full versions of the films can be seen here.

BU’s Law Academic to present at Austrian Ministry of Defense’s Annual Symposium on Hybrid Threats

Sascha Dov Bachmann, Associate Professor in International Law, FMC, Convener Environment & Threats Strategic Research Group and Co-Director Research Cluster Conflict, Rule of Law and Society will present on his ongoing work on Hybrid Warfare at this year’s Annual Symposium (Jahrestagung) of Austria’s Ministry of Defense on 18 November 2015. Invited by the Organizers from the Wissenschaftskommission of the Bundesministerium fuer Landesverteidigung und Sport the event brings together leading experts on the topic of Hybrid Threats and seeks to give answers to present security threats such as economic warfare, hybrid threats, cyber warfare, media in conflict, social cohesion and its potential for conflict, migration wars and Russia’s new non linear warfare. Sascha will use his existing work on hybrid warfare https://twitter.com/GJIA_Online/media which is in collaboration with colleagues from the Swedish Defense University and NATO to discuss the origins of Hybrid Warfare and its contemporary use by Russia in the form of non linear warfare. He argues that Hybrid Warfare represents a Revolution in Military Affairs (RMA) and that Western Defense doctrines have to adapt.

BUDI’s ESRC Festival of Learning event held on 11th November 2015

BUDI hosted a packed day of events showcasing some of our research, community-based projects and awareness-raising work. Attendees included university staff and students, people living with dementia and their family members, care home staff, members of the Alzheimer’s Society and interested members of the public. The day started with an announcement of the commitment by Bournemouth University to work towards becoming dementia friendly. This entails delivering dementia friends training to all university staff and, in time, to all students, ensuring Human Resource processes meet the needs of family members caring for people with dementia and anyone with a diagnosis of dementia working in the university, ensuring any marketing and communications are ‘dementia friendly’ and working with Estates to ensure the university meets dementia friendly design principles as much as possible.

We were delighted to see the return of the BUDI orchestra, comprising people with dementia, their family members, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra musicians John Murphy and Kevin Pritchard and led by Andy Baker, a freelance musician, who showed us techniques to support successful rehearsals and performances. This interactive workshop had everyone participating and it set the tone for an inspiring day.

We also heard from Dr Samuel Nyman about his recently NIHR funded Tai Chi project and had a chance to learn some basic Tai Chi from Robert Joyce. In the afternoon we were inspired to create poetry by Jonnie Seagrave ‘Fluffypunk’ and shown how to create poetry with people with dementia.

We then heard from Mary O’Malley about her Ph.D. investigating wayfinding in people with dementia, followed by a dementia friends training session delivered by Dr Michelle Heward. Throughout the day, we had visitors to our BUDI stand and the Alzheimer’s Society’s table, In the Student Centre, SportBU had a sponsored spin bike challenge to cycle 850,000 metres – a metre for every person living with Dementia in the UK. They managed this amazing feat and raised £100.00 for the Alzheimer’s Society. A huge thank you to everyone who took part and contributed.

The day finished with a screening of the film Still Alice, which portrays the journey of a woman diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in her early 50s, and this was followed by a lively panel discussion (Professor Candida Yates, Professor Iain MacRury, Dr Fiona Cownie and Dr Fiona Kelly), in which the audience offered their insights, experiences and thoughts on the film.

TPM Carol Richardson, joint Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust and CMMPH’s PhD student, published her latest article ‘On running for supervisor’ in the most recent edition of The Practising Midwife. Carol as Clinical Academic Doctoral Midwife is conducting her thesis research on the topic of pregnancy and obesity. Her PhD is supervised by FHSS Prof. Vanora Hundley, Dr. Carol Wilkins & Prof. Edwin van Teijlingen.

November Café Scientific joint venture between FHSS & FMC

This month’s Café Scientific last week (Nov. 3rd) was run as a collaboration between CMMPH and the Media School. Café Scientific is a monthly event hosted at Café Boscanova for Bournemouth University.

This month’s debate was chaired by CMMPH’s Prof. Vanora Hundley (sitting in the centre of the photo taken by Naomi Kay). The debaters on either side were Dr. Ann Luce and Prof. Edwin van Teijlingen. Ann Luce is a well recognised media researcher and a Senior Lecturer in Journalism and Communication who argued against the motion “Fear in childbirth: is the media responsible?” Two opposing presentations generated a lively debate. The audience, however, was not with Ann and overwhelmingly voted in favour of the motion.

The next session of Café Scientific also has a health flavour as James Gavin will be talking on Tuesday December 1st on: Upwardly mobile: Why stair climbing helps us stay active.

Hello from an up and coming researcher, Dr. Choe :)

Hello BU Researchers:

This is Jaeyeon Choe, your new colleague originally from Gangnam, South Korea. After earning my Ph.D. at The Pennsylvania State University, USA, and working in China and Macau, I have joined BU as a Senior Lecturer in Events & Leisure, Faculty of Management. My primary research areas are Spiritual/Religious Tourism, and Chinese Consumer Behavior. Recently, I presented the papers, “Tourism development and its impact on Filipino workers’ quality of life in Macao, China” at Ethnicity and Tourism conference in Chiang Mai, Thailand; and “Chinese consumer behavior: conspicuous consumption at an international wine festival in Dalian, China” at Consumer Behavior in Tourism Symposium in Bruneck, Italy.

I am also currently finishing up a funded study, ‘Tourism development and cross-cultural understanding of quality of life among local residents, skilled and unskilled immigrant workers in Macao, China’ that was granted by Institute for Tourism Studies, Macao. I am preparing for another project on spiritual tourism among westerners in South East Asia, utilising an affiliation with the Centre for Asian Tourism Research at Chiang Mai University, Thailand. It is planned for the summer of 2016, which I am really looking forward to it.

Fear in childbirth: is the media responsible?

The media are often blamed for influencing society’s attitudes and views. In this month’s Café Scientific we will debate the impact of the mass media on women’s views of childbirth. The motion is: “Fear in childbirth: is the media responsible?”

Café Scientific is being hosted at Café Boscanova in Bournemouth on November 3rd at 19.30. The debate is open to the general public. It will be chaired by Prof. Vanora Hundley, Professor of Midwifery and the two proponents on either side of the debate are Dr. Ann Luce and Prof. Edwin van Teijlingen. Ann Luce is a well recognised media researcher and a Senior Lecturer in Journalism and Communication. Edwin van Teijlingen is a medical sociologist and Professor of Reproductive Health Research.

The debate will touch upon social perceptions and beliefs about childbirth can increase women’s requests for interventions, such as caesarean section, with long-term health implications for mothers and babies. This month’s Café Scientific will explore the role of the mass media in shaping these beliefs and identify whether media portrayals are responsible for rising rates of intervention.

Join us for an interactive debate on the impact of the mass media on women’s views of childbirth. The audience will be given the opportunity to vote on the motion before and after the debate.

Public Engagement Opportunity: University of the Third Age Public Lectures – Speakers Needed

The University of the Third Age, commonly referred to as the U3A, are a community of retired/ semi retired people who enjoy the reward of learning and take part in regular groups and sessions to expand their skills and life experiences. BU is supporting this community by organising bi-annual public lecture days where members of the U3A, as well as anyone else from the community who may be interested, can come onto campus and hear about the latest developments in the academic world.

I’m looking for speakers for the next two talks, taking place in the EBC on Wednesday 16 December 2015 and Wednesday 30 March 2016. Ideally presentations will be around 40 minutes long followed by a Q&A session and can be on any topic that would be of interest to a general audience.

The Cyber-landscape: you, your data and the Dark web

The line that separates our physical existence and the cyber landscape is becoming increasingly blurry with our daily activities moving online and our actions online having a direct consequence on our daily existence. A majority of our transactions (such as shopping, bill payments, banking, etc.) and social interactions are now undertaken online.

Our personal data facilitate these transactions and interactions. They enable and sustain the idea of a “free” internet in which personal data is exchanged for “free” apps and access to information. This has made personal data highly valuable in the cyber landscape. So much so that a vast array of encryption technologies and legislation such as the Data Protection Act have been put in place to protect and govern the use of our personal data.

This talk highlights the importance of our personal data in the cyber landscape. The legitimate and illegitimate use of our personal data is highlighted along with mechanisms in place to keep our personal data secure and procedures for handling circumstances when the security of our personal data is compromised.

Public engagement success – Biology Week in local school receives thousands of visitors

Saturday 10th – Sunday 18th October saw the celebration of Biology Week nationwide. To join the celebrations Genoveva Esteban and Daniel Franklin from the Department of Life and Environmental Sciences (SciTech) took part in the Family Festival of Science on 10th October at the Thomas Hardye School (Dorchester), which was attended by over 1,500 visitors. Drs Esteban and Franklin organised two hands-on activities: Organisms that light up their world (funded by the Royal Society of Biology), with help from Wei-Jun Liang (Scitech) and his students who prepared some amazing glowing bacteria; and Ecology under the Microscope (funded by the British Ecological Society), showing how food chains work. Visitors came from far and near…Stroud Valley, Oxford, Devizes, Cranborne, Lyme Regis, Bournemouth, Wimborne, Portland, Sherborne and, of course, Dorchester. Visitors’ age ranged from babies in arms up to Year 12 helpers aged 17 and beyond to great grandparents. A very busy but tremendous day for everyone involved. Special thanks go to Mrs Judith Wardlaw, other staff at Thomas Hardye School and to all the 6th Formers that helped on the day.
