The Value of the Integrated Thesis

Bournemouth University offers students undertaking doctoral studies several options for how they might present their work for examination.  One increasingly popular, but sometimes misunderstood, option is the Integrated Thesis.  This thesis format allows students to incorporate papers into their thesis.  These can be published papers, papers accepted for publication, papers submitted, prepared but not submitted papers and other unpublished papers or reports.

Whilst the Integrated Thesis might look a little different, in all other ways the doctorate mirrors the processes and requirements of other doctorates.  Decisions about submitting an Integrated Thesis are usually made during the first half of a student’s doctorate, with the request to submit an Integrated Thesis being made at the point of Major Review.

When contemplating the submission of an Integrated Thesis, the student and the supervisory team need to ensure that this type of thesis will work for the student and the research being presented.  Import issues to consider might include:

  • It is important to reflect on how the published items will demonstrate a coherent body of knowledge that contributes to the thesis, rather than a collection of disjointed and disconnected papers.
  • The papers included in the Integrated Thesis will often be co-authored with supervisors and others, so it is important to demonstrate that the student has contributed most of the work towards the paper.

An Integrated Thesis is much more than simply replacing parts of the thesis with published papers.  For a more comprehensive overview of the requirements for submitting an Integrated Thesis refer to section 10.2 of the Code of Practice for Research Degrees.

The Integrated Thesis has several advantages over the traditional format for a doctoral thesis, including:

  • Getting research into practice as soon as possible is particularly important in the health and social science disciplines. The Integrated Thesis gives students the opportunity to begin publishing and sharing their work sooner.
  • Preparing an Integrated Thesis creates greater opportunities to develop a student’s doctoral work. Papers published and included in the thesis will have been exposed to external and independent peer review.  Reviewer feedback could help students develop their thinking around their research and thesis preparation.  Publishing can also build networking opportunities.
  • Publishing is an important part of the work of all academics so publishing during the doctoral journey will help students to build their CVs and develop their academic profiles. These publications will also have institutional benefits through REF submissions or otherwise contributing to the reputation of the University.
  • Publishing early in this way also puts students in a better position to start bidding for research funding soon after completing their studies.

Introducing Jo Schofield, the new Funding Development Officer for FMC

Hi, I’ve recently been appointed the new Funding Development Officer for FMC. You might be familiar with my name as I’ve been working at BU for more than ten years now in Research Development and Support (RDS).

I will be supporting colleagues in research applications, checking eligibility and funder guidance, advising on timescales, costing and pricing, producing pre-award contractual documentation, institutional approval and proposal submission.

My previous role was on the post-award side, administering the 500+ externally funded projects, processing claims, travel and expenses. I’ve also worked on the ethics panels in the past as the committee clerk.

I look forward to meeting you online or in person in room W329 in Weymouth House most Tuesdays.

RDS Funding Development Team Support – Update

With more sunny days across Dorset last and this week, we are all very close to summer holiday season. There are more than 120 external funding applications the Funding Development Team is currently supporting and I wanted to share some good news.

I am sure, BU academic community will welcome our new members of staff – lovely ladies Kate Percival and Jo Schofield.

Kate recently started as Research Facilitator for Life Sciences, Jo started last week as Funding Development Officer supporting Faculty of Media and Communication. They both are ongoing internal training and, we believe, they will be able to fully settle in during next coming months.

From 1st June, our new Funding Development Manager Peng Peng Hatch will also start in her new role. More details regarding FDT staff you may find here.

As you know, from August 2022 Research Facilitators changed their activity from supporting faculties to funder-focus. This way of working has already shown that RDS is able to deliver better quality of support to increase quality of proposals. EMERGE Symposium 2023

Affect in Theory and Practice Beyond the Threshold of Language

 Affect theory| Affective technologies | Missing half-second | Intensive Time |

 June 7th 2023, Poole Gateway Building

The 2023 EMERGE Symposium will explore the significance of the concept of affect for practice-based media research. The philosopher Brian Massumi identified affect through what he called the “the missing half-second” an elusive pre-interpretive moment where we register raw experience before it is converted into language, verbal or visual. The force of affect is felt deeply but resists codification. Its societal presence and urgency is frequently articulated through an increasing emphasis on ‘lived experience’ as an embodied form of knowing capable of challenging the traditional hierarchies of power and knowledge.

The symposium will be a timely opportunity for EMERGE researchers to address the affective turn in ways that connect our individual practice to the wider culture, sharing our work, ideas, and assumptions in the context of a deep dive into the dynamics of affect facilitated by the work of our key-note speaker, the Dutch media theorist Eric Kluitenberg.

The keynote address will be followed by EMERGE members and affiliates presenting examples of practice that resonate with the theme in ways that will open up discussion for the afternoon session.

During the afternoon EMERGE members, affiliates and invited guests to workshop the implications of the ideas presented in order to envision the next phase of EMERGE’s development.

Anatomy of an impact case study workshop – 7th June

If you would like to know more about REF impact case studies, are hoping to write a case study in the future, or are working towards a case study for the next REF, then this session is for you.

A two-hour, in-person workshop examining in detail everything impact case study, we will look at the different sections and what is required for each one, then examine impact case studies from previous REFs to establish what the panels are looking for. We will then move on to thinking about what you would need to do to start building your own impact case study.

By the end of this session you will be familiar with the structure of an impact case study, what makes an excellent case study and what you will need in order to start building an impact case study from your own research.

Deadline approaching to have your say

We have launched the Bournemouth University Postgraduate Research Experience Survey for Supervisors.


The Advance HE Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) has just closed and 40% of our PGRs provided feedback on their experiences at Bournemouth University.

This year, we are running a parallel survey for supervisors which asks a similar range of questions to PRES to also give supervisors a voice, and to provide balance and/or support to the issues raised by the PGRs.

The survey covers topics including PGR supervision; resources/research culture; progress/assessment; responsibilities; support for PGRs; research skills/personal development; and opportunities/overall experience.

Your experiences will be combined with those of other PGR supervisors to help us to understand the overall picture more clearly from the supervisors’ perspective, and the combined views of PGR supervisors will be considered alongside the views of the PGRs being reported in the PRES. The responses will be analysed and reported as appropriate.

Participation is optional but we would very much appreciate your feedback to help us further review and improve the support available for our PGRs.

BU academic interviewed for major international newspapers on her research on political campaigning and the use of social media

In light of the Greek national elections taking place in May 2023, BU academic Anastasia Veneti was interviewed by many international newspapers on her research on political campaigning and the use of social media.

Her latest interview was conducted by Francisco Peregil and Hibai Arbide Azan for the major Spanish newspaper El Pais. The interview was about the lead of current Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the main parties’ communication strategies and can be read here.

Dr Veneti was also interviewed for the oldest and most established socialist newspaper in Greece, I Epochi. In this interview, she talked about political dilemmas as expressed in political discourse and the unfolding of the communication strategies of the main Greek political parties during the pre-electoral period.

Finally, Dr Veneti commented on the use of Tik Tok by Greek politicians in an interview with Vicki Katechaki for Kathimerini, a Greek newspaper with the widest circulation.

Talk by Prof. Kira Nobre, this Thursday the 25th at 13.00h (Inspire Lecture Theatre, Fusion)

We would like to please draw your attention to a seminar organized by the Department of Psychology this Thursday 25th from 13.00 to 14.00 at the Inspire Lecture Theatre (Fusion Building).

 The guest speaker is Dr Kia Nobre (Oxford University), invited by Dr Ben Parris.

Kia Nobre is a distinguished figure in cognitive neuroscience, renowned for her groundbreaking research contributions. She leads the Brain & Cognition Lab at the University of Oxford. Current research in her group investigates how the brain prioritises and selects information from sensory input and from memories, to build our psychological experience and guide human behaviour. In addition, they examine how these mechanisms develop over the lifespan and how they are disrupted in psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders.

Her research combines behavioural methods with brain imaging and brain stimulation. During her prolific career, Prof. Nobre contributed to discovering brain areas specialised for word recognition and face processing, describing the functional neuroanatomy of the brain network for controlling spatial attention and characterizing the relationship between attention and memory.

Kia Nobre is one of the most recognised cognitive neuroscientists worldwide, you are all warmly invited to attend her talk.

“The Way of the Productivity Ninja” RKEDF Workshop

We’ve partnered up with Think Productive who are bringing us their brilliant “The Way of the Productivity Ninja” workshop on Thursday 29th June 2023, from 1:00pm to 3:00pm.

 

In this practical, engaging, interactive and fun 2 hour online workshop you’ll learn how to utilize the mindset and tactics of the 9 Characteristics of the Productivity Ninja.

For over a decade, the Think Productive team have been helping people worldwide to get their stuff done, while looking after themselves and each other – and get that elusive balance between work and wellbeing that we’re all looking for. Especially over the last few years we’ve all faced new challenges and circumstances as the ways and places we’re working have changed radically, and we’re now all exploring together what the future of work might be like in the longer term.

 

In the session Lee Cottier will be sharing ideas, tips, tools and habits that will help unleash your inner Productivity Ninja. There’ll be an opportunity to reflect on what’s been going well, and where you might want to make some changes – plus an invitation and loads of inspiration to try out some new approaches. All this, and you’ll create your own personal Productivity Ninja Action Plan too. After the session all attendees will get an eBook version of the “How to be a Productivity Ninja” book.

RDS Funding Development Briefings- AHRC focus 24th May 2023

We are back next week, 24th May at 12:00 and discussing the latest news from AHRC, the new funding system (TFS) that is replacing JeS and the requirements.

To remind you that the briefings are slightly changing, will now take place fortnightly. Every second briefing will include academic drop-in sessions for academics willing to ask specific questions to pre-award team members or simply to meet people and have a conversation with those providing bidding support. We will also welcome ideas about how to better organise briefing-like sessions for the next academic year.

Funding spotlights, as part of briefing sessions, will be organised once per month. There are many recordings and presentations from previous briefing sessions available on Brightspace and briefings’ Teams channel. We aim to update pre-award Brightspace content to make it more user friendly in terms of finding exactly what academics are looking for.
