SBRI competition open for registration – Long term care revolution

The long-term care revolution national challenge, an SBRI competition run by Innovate UK, is now open for registration. 

The aim of this competition to stimulate the development of innovative new products, services and systems that disrupt the current long-term care model, have a clear and viable route to market as well as the potential to be commercialised at scale.

Applications from consortia that include companies outside the long-term care sector  are encourage to apply bringing  fresh and innovative ideas to the challenges of this competition.

KTP Surgery – Next week!

Biotechnology YES 2015 is open for applications

 Biotechnology YES, now in its 20th year, is an innovative competition developed to raise awareness of the commercialisation of ideas among early career researchers. The competition is funded by sponsorship and aims to encourage an entrepreneurial culture in the UK postgraduate and postdoctoral base for the benefit of the UK bioeconomy.

 6 workshops are being held across the UK in the autumn and three of these are to be hosted by industry:

  • Plant, microbial and environment workshop hosted for the fifth year by Syngenta at Jealott’s Hill
  • Biomedical YES workshop again hosted by GSK and the Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst
  • Food, Nutrition and Wellbeing workshop hosted for the first time by Unilever at Colworth

The Royal Society of Chemistry is once again sponsoring teams to compete in Chemistry YES to be run in conjunction with the Biotechnology YES workshops.

 Environment YES, now in its 10th year, will once again be run alongside Biotechnology YES.

This competition is open to all bioscience early career researchers not just those funded by BBSRC.

CLiMB Research Update

CLiMB is based within The National Centre of Post-Qualifying Social Work at Bournemouth University and operates an independent and expert research team who are able to provide bespoke and tailored programmes of evaluation to meet local and unique requirements.

We provide skilled expertise, ensuring that ethical considerations are discharged correctly; that the tools used will appropriately measure what they need to measure; and that the data analysis, interpretation and presentation is suitable and will withstand scrutiny.

Evaluating impact of any leadership development is integral to the concept of a learning culture, continuously improving the potential of all individuals to make a positive difference in the quality of their interventions with others. Too much leadership development has been about input rather than assessing the impact and learning that takes place. Our approach is about supporting the workforce to adapt and improve their services through sound leadership development.

We evaluate the impact of what we do in the workplace, and this provides evidence for commissioners and purchasers of the value of our contribution to achieving positive change. Our main point of differentiation from other universities and development providers is the way we design, deliver and assess our work drawing on our deep knowledge of ‘what works’. It is not a surprise that our knowledge, experience and excellence in this area has resulted in CLiMB being the first port of call for many organisations’ development and research needs.

The Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care

NIHRWe have been commissioned by CLAHRC (The Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care, part of the National Institute for Health Research) to provide our expertise and support their project team in the East of England. We are assisting in the design and implementation of a fully triangulated impact evaluation of the two GP Mental Health Leadership programmes over the East of England and the Southern Region. Working with our experience and knowledge of the Leadership Framework, we have been able to provide step-by-step consultancy and support to both guide and facilitate the process.

Centre of Workforce Intelligence

CWFI We have been commissioned by the Centre of Workforce Intelligence funded by the Department of Health, to model the future demand of the health and social care workforce over the next 30 years. Professor Keith Brown and Emily Rosenorn-Lanng were invited to participate in the Elicitation workshop facilitated by DoH with a host of Social Care Workforce leaders and specialists to look at the current and future impacts on the workforce and what this may be more care planning in the future. Emily in particular sourced and analysed the national data for the level of demand and availability of the current workforce.

London Borough of Enfield

EnfieldWe were commissioned by the London Borough of Enfield to evaluate their Making Safeguarding Personal Strategy in order for them to apply for Gold Standard status from the Local Government Association. Dr Gary Barrett and Sarah Wincewicz were invited to spend time with the teams at Enfield to explore safeguarding practice. As part of this work we are collaborating with Enfield and other local authorities to create a Safeguarding App, which will allow practitioners to access the most current safeguarding information on a mobile device.

£7m funding competition open for registration

 

Wave Energy Scotland (WES) is launching four new SBRI funding competitions with up to £7m funding available.

The aim of this funding competition is the development of new innovative energy conversion solutions that are applicable to the wave energy sector. More information on this funding opportunity.

The Impact Awards for Knowledge Exchange and Commercialisation (KEC) Professionals

The Impact Awards from RCUK and PraxisUnico reward and recognise knowledge exchange, technology transfer and commercialisation professionals who have excelled in enabling and facilitating the achievement of impact from the outcomes of research.

PraxisUnico and the Research Councils are working together to facilitate the sharing of best practice, and to acknowledge and celebrate the work that Knowledge Exchange and Commercialisation (KEC) professionals do in enabling impact from UK research organisations.

The Impact Awards from RCUK and PraxisUnico reward and recognise knowledge exchange, technology transfer and commercialisation professionals who have excelled in enabling and facilitating the achievement of impact from the outcomes of research.

  • Stimulates innovative approaches to KEC activities in UK research organisations and beyond

The competition replaces the PraxisUnico Impact Awards and the BBSRC Activating Impact competition.

Knowledge Exchange and Impact Team: how have we been flying the KEIT for you?

 

The Knowledge Exchange and Impact Team (fondly known to us as KEIT) is a relatively new team within RKEO.  KEIT is made up of an enthusiastic group of people working to ensure that BU’s research and  knowledge is informed by society for the benefit of society on a number of cross institutional projects such as the Festival of Learning and HEIF-5 funded initiatives, amongst many others!

 

The past month has been a busy one as Festival of Learning preparation kicks off in earnest.  Over 150 events have been submitted for this summer’s Festival (11th – 17th July), so there’s bound to be something for every taste and interest!  Excitingly, this year will feature a day dedicated to family activities, including a whole host of different interactive sessions, games and workshops.

 

This week also sees the launch of the 2015 Bournemouth Research Chronicle, an annual publication showcasing some of the excellent research going on at BU.  From 3D printing, to mapping auditory processing to improving nutrition in cancer survivors, our academics are involved in a variety of hugely exciting and potentially influential areas of research.  The BRC is just one of the ways that we make sure people beyond BU know about our work.

 

Another way we’re telling the world about our academic’s research is through the newly launched Research Photography Competition.  Around 50 academics and postgraduates have submitted photos, summing up the essence of their work.  Their creative and engaging images are a testament not just to their research skills, but also to their ability to explain their research in a new and innovative way.  Voting is open until 27th March, and the most popular images will form part of a photo exhibition on Talbot campus later in the year.  More details will follow!

 

Our student engagement programme continues to go from strength-to-strength, with a lively discussion at 14:Live following a presenting on Samuel Nyman’s dementia research, articles in the Rock and a feature on Nerve radio.  And if you’re on Talbot campus today, pop down to the semi-circle outside SportBU to try out some of our hands on science activities as part of British Science Week.  More details about the event can be found here.

 

Looking beyond our university community, KEIT has begun a new working partnership with Dorset Police.  It’s a fantastic opportunity to use our combined knowledge to target key issues for society.  If you know of anyone who would be interested in getting involved in our collaboration, please contact Rebecca Edwards for more information.

New KTP vacancies

You may have seen lots about Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP), perhaps from the KTP Academic Development Scheme or on blog posts, or perhaps even whilst in conversation with your colleagues.  At Bournemouth University, we’re working hard to maximise our KTP provision and this is working..!

We currently have two KTP projects in recruitment stages where we are looking for KTP associates (a graduate hired to work on the projects, full time for the duration of the project) to fill these KTP positions.

Chantacre

Following on from a successful series of shorter KTP, this position is a 25-month fixed term appointment for an IT Systems Project Manager.  This is a challenging yet potentially very rewarding opportunity to apply creative and innovative thinking, as well as strong technical skills that will result in an innovative and exploitable capability.  The role will involve the creation of a mobile convergence solution within a company operating over a wide geographical area enabling information and data exchange in real time whilst maintaining data integrity and security. As this is a KTP the Associate will not only be required to research, develop and install the solution but also embed sufficient knowledge within the company to enable them to both use and develop the system in an efficient and sustainable manner.

Nautilus

This is the company’s first KTP and is for a Computer Graphics/Games Programmer for a 30-month project.  The role will involve the researching of all types of 3D terrain generation applications and then the development of proprietary prototype software that will allow for rapid, automatic/semi-automatic 3D terrain content generation for use within the Virtual Battle Space (VBS) 3 game engine. In addition to this, the role will involve embedding the capability within the company to enable further development and exploitation of the software.

KTP Academic Development Scheme – join us!

Following on from the launch of the Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) Academic Development Scheme last Autumn, the second cohort is currently in recruitment.

Academics on this scheme now are working towards a target of submitting a KTP proposal within a year of starting the scheme and are currently in various stages leading up to this.  KTP is an excellent way of developing knowledge exchange whilst demonstrating impact and also bringing in income.

The KTP scheme is 40 years old this year and there is a is a lot of funding (managed by Innovate UK) to dedicate to KTP, so why not join in and find out more about KTP?  KTP submissions have a 90% success rate which shows us that there is an huge potential for us to grow our KTP portfolio with a funded scheme that has such a great and solid history.

Knowledge Exchange and Impact Team: how have we been flying the KEIT for you?

The Knowledge Exchange and Impact Team (fondly known to us as KEIT) is a relatively new team within RKEO.  KEIT is made up of an enthusiastic group of people working to ensure that BU’s research and  knowledge is informed by society for the benefit of society on a number of cross institutional projects such as the Festival of Learning and HEIF-5 funded initiatives, amongst many others!

The past month has been a busy one for the Knowledge Exchange and Impact Team starting with the excellent news that the research website had won the ‘Best Research Website’ in the international eduStyle Awards, winning both the People’s Choice and Judged Award categories – fighting off competition from MIT, Yale and Columbia. If that wasn’t exciting enough, we have been continuing to profile BU’s excellent REF results and Dorset Magazine has featured Professor David Osselton in a piece which brings insight to the region on about his fascinating toxicology research.

We have not rested on our laurels engaging our student body with our amazing research either, with over 40 students attending our first live research chat (known from here on in as 14: Live) led by Professor Janet Dickinson. Students were also treated to insights from Dr James Gavin in The Rock on how exercise can improve ankle flexibility and postural stability in older people. Our public engagement programme has also continued in earnest, with Café Scientifique returning in February. Professor Matt Bentley led a fascinating talk exploring whether reproduction in the sea is lunacy? Despite snow on the morning of the event, Café Boscanova was packed!

BU’s record of partnership working received a big boost with the announcement that Bournemouth University’s Global Environment Solutions (BUG) HEIF funded project team have been commissioned by Poole Council to try and bring an end to the water quality issues which have become synonymous with the lake in Poole Park. Enabled by funding from the Heritage Lottery Funding this is a fantastic result for the local community and BU.

The Knowledge Transfer Partnerships Academic Development Scheme (KTPADs) is once again open for registration. Led by Innovate UK, KTPs are a brilliant way of working with industry and creating employment for an exceptional graduate or post-doctoral researcher. Aside from the work of KEIT you can outwardly see, we are busy planning exciting initiatives for the months and years ahead. Scheduling is currently underway for the next Festival of Learning which takes place between 11th-17th July. We are currently working on some *extremely* exciting events, so watch this space. We are also planning out the Festival of Learning On Tour, so if you want to wow the world or have some fun whilst collecting data, come and join us at a public event. On a more technical note, we are working to support researchers to develop and evidence the impact of their research. This is ranging from the technical side with the development of a new institutional wide system for impact capture, through to personalised support to maximise the impact of research. We are also nearly ready to publish the next Bournemouth Research Chronicle – keep your eyes peeled!
