Creative England – Interest free business loans now open for applications

Creative England would  like to hear from creative digital companies who need anything from £50k – £200k in order to grow their business.

Eligible companies include those across content creation, games, tech and digital based in any of the English regions outside of Greater London. The interest-free loan is repaid over 3 years, and must be matched 50:50 with an alternative source of finance.

Shakespeare festival: open call for digital ideas

British Council

What is it about?

BBC Arts Online and the British Council, supported by the GREAT Britain campaign, are collaborating to enable audiences, in the UK and overseas, to experience and discover the best of British Shakespeare in all art forms. The plan is to open with a 24 hour live-stream on 23 April 2016 and to offer new content on a regular basis over six months.

The British Council, on behalf of the GREAT Britain campaign, is calling for ideas from artists and cultural organisations across the UK. Funding is available for international rights clearances and to support the production of new content.

Five key cultural organisations are already working with  to provide world-class content – Shakespeare’s Globe, The Royal Opera House, the British Film Institute, Hay Festivals and the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Shakespeare400 consortium coordinated by King’s College.

The content will be hosted on BBC Shakespeare Lives (bbc.co.uk/shakespearelives ) and promoted internationally by BBC Worldwide online ( bbc.com/culture) so global rights need to be cleared . The campaign will be supported by social media campaigns in order to drive audiences to this unique festival.

This is an unprecedented partnership project for the BBC and the British Council and  believe it has great potential for all organisations involved to increase their international reach and reputation.

How can I get involved?

We are particularly looking for ideas which appeal to younger audiences and convey the diversity and creativity of the UK’s Arts sector. If you are interested in applying, please complete the attached form.

2 weeks left to get your Festival of Learning proposal in!

The deadline for proposals for the Festival of Learning is 31st January. Proposals cannot be submitted beyond this date. We want to be able to showcase the best of what we do here at BU, which means we are looking for proposals from as many colleagues as possible. If you have not submitted a proposal as yet, there is still time – just!

Think of an idea for an event that demonstrates your research – will it be innovating and interesting to members of the public? Watch our video from 2015 for some inspiration.

  1. Decide if you want your event to be a bookable event that people can sign up for or whether you’d like a run a stall or drop in activity instead (i.e. an activity based on passing traffic rather than pre-bookings)
  2. Consider who you want to be your target audience (adults, families, businesses etc.)
  3. Consider whether your event meets the Festivals objectives, what you plan to do during the event, how it will appeal to your intended audience and what your attendees will get out of attending the event.
  4. Complete the Festival of Learning event application before January 31st 2016: see here (We are unable to accept late proposals due to the tight turn around between the call closing and review by the panel.)

Competition offering cash prizes for the most innovative ideas that can be turned into a commercial success. The 2016 Geovation Challenge question is ‘How can we better manage water in Britain, sustainably?’

Background

The Geovation Challenge was initiated, funded and managed by Ordnance Survey. Its current collaborators include Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs, Environment Agency, OCG, Springwise and United Utilities.

Objectives of Fund

The GeoVation Challenge aims to encourage open collaboration in addressing communities’ needs where geography is a key enabler. Open innovation, data, tools and information can be combined to create new ventures which generate social and environmental value.

The current GeoVation Challenge is focused on tackling the global issues around water. The Geovation Challenge question is ‘How can we improve water use in Britain sustainably?

Value Notes

The Programme is divided into two parts:

  • Part one (phases one to three over a period of six months) provides a total of £10,000 in funding.
  • Part two (for those who successfully deliver a prototype at the end of this and move on to phase four which is another six months on the Programme) provides an additional £10,000 in funding.

Funding will be given during each of the phases to progress the idea to the next level.

Those who are successful at phase four will receive help in seeking extra funding so that they have more than one source of investment and can move toward product launch.

Match Funding Restrictions

Match funding is not a specified requirement.

 Who Can Apply

The Challenge is open to UK based organisations and residents over 18 years of age. This includes community groups, entrepreneurs, developers, innovators and local authorities.

Those who join the Programme will be expected to spend a minimum of 20 hours per week working on their project and attending core workshops at the Geovation Hub in London.

Restrictions

The following cannot enter the competition:

  • Members of the civil service.
  • Individuals involved in the administration of the GeoVation Awards Programme.

Eligible Expenditure

This year’s GeoVation Challenge is focused on tackling the global issues around water.

Ideas must help address the GeoVation Challenge question: ‘How can we better manage water in Britain, sustainably?’

The Geovation Water Challenge is focusing on five themes:

  • Too little water.
  • Too much water.
  • Poor water quality.
  • Ageing infrastructure.
  • Water use behaviour.

Nesta is an innovation charity with a mission to help people and organisations bring great ideas to life and have just published their  list of the trends, social movements and technological breakthroughs they believe will impact  lives over the next year.

This is the fifth annual prediction series published by Nesta , on the trends, social movements and technology breakthroughs set to impact our lives in the year ahead.

In 2016 cyber security will become a household concern, healthcare professionals will prescribe video games and small food producers will take on the supermarkets armed with better tech and valuable data. Check out this year’s list and find out what has been learnt from half a decade of Nesta predictions.

Knowledge Exchange and Impact Team – KEIT flying high as ever!

The KEIT team have been working hard this December and have had a very busy and productive month where some team highlights, projects and updates have included:

  • KTP’s – there are changes brewing within Innovate UK in a bid to make KTP more competitive and innovative. Changes are due to start being implemented from the second quarter of 2016, with communications being provided early 2016 from Innovate UK
  • Undergraduate Research Assistants – we received an overwhelming 52 applications for the 2016 URA scheme. All awarded positions are currently recruiting for students to work on the projects in spring.
  • Student Project Bank – the project is currently recruiting for a Project Co-coordinator with a project launch date of early 2016

Business Engagement

  • HEIF – project activity for the last 12 months forms part of the latest return sent to HEFCE. This includes commentary and financial information on all projects in addition to a case study. “BUG” was selected for this purpose.  Click here for more details on the project.
  • The first quarterly report and committee meeting for the current 12 live projects has taken place. All projects are progressing well.  External media coverage has already featured the project led by Sarah Bate:” Superior Face Recognition: Generating KE with the Police Force with coverage in The New Scientist and The Independent.  With interest also shown by ITV and the BBC.
  • There was a great turn out at the BRAD event on business engagement and networking that included presentations from internal and external speakers. With good feedback there is certainly an appetite to engage more with the business community as well as fellow academics. We are looking at how these opportunities can be developed so keep an eye out for more information on the research blog and other staff communication channels.

Public Engagement

  • The ESRC Festival of social sciences was a huge success last month with a great turn out of people and some really positive feedback! Thank you to those that came along or participated in running an event.
  • The call for proposals for the Festival of learning is now open with a January 31st It’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase the wonderful research coming out of BU to the public. If you’re interested in running an event then click here for details on how to submit a proposal.
  • KEIT ran a public lecture day for the University of the 3rd Age which proved to be a great hit with two really interesting topics from around the restoration of the Epping – Ongar heritage railway and our local environments rich marine history.
  • The next Café Scientifique is happening on Tuesday 2nd February where we will be joined by Martin Graff for a valentine’s themed topic around the function of nonverbal behaviour in Human Courtship. Please do feel free to come along to this free event at Café Boscanova in Boscombe at 7.30pm. Click here for more details.
  • Genna West, Katie Breadmore and Naomi Kay from team KEIT had a great time at the NCCPE Engage conference in Bristol to discover the latest trends and updates in all things public engagement.
  • The interdisciplinary Research week kicks off in January with a number of different topics being covered running. Click here for details on some great free events!

Congratulations to FHSS staff on latest KPI publication

Five RiversCongratulations to FHSS Celia Beckett and Jaqui Hewitt-Taylor and colleagues Richard Cross and Pam McConnell based at Five Rivers Child Care, Salisbury. Their first paper describes the exciting process of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project between BU and Five Rivers Child Care which started in 2012 and finished recently in 2015.[1]    The project was established to develop a stepped assessment package that would help to identify the emotional and behavioural needs of children who are looked after to ensure the right services are accessed and to monitor their progress.

Smart 2015/2016 – R&D funding available

Innovate 2011v4A grant scheme which offers funding to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to engage in R&D projects in the strategically important areas of science, engineering and technology.

The scheme supports SMEs carrying out R&D which offers potentially significant rewards and that could stimulate UK economic growth.

Three types of grant are available:
  • Proof of market
  • Proof of concept
  • Development of prototype.
Any UK SME undertaking research and development may apply; applications are accepted on a rolling basis for assessment by independent experts.
This call is currently open closing on 21 January 2016.

Cross-platform production in digital media – up to £4m available

Innovate UK is to invest up to £4 million in collaborative R&D projects that stimulate innovation in the UK’s creative industries.
This competition aims to support projects that address convergence in digital media technologies. It covers film, television, online video, animation and video games, and includes pre- production, production and post- production processes, particularly for visual effects technologies.
Projects must be collaborative and led by a business. We expect to fund mainly industrial research projects. Small businesses could receive up to 70% of their eligible project costs, medium- sized businesses 60% and large businesses 50%.
We expect projects to range in size from total costs of £300,000 to £750,000, although we may consider projects outside this range.
The call is currently open , with registration closing on 23 December 2015 . The deadline for expressions of interest is at noon on 6 January 2016.

Game Changing Technologies for the Energy Sector – Information Webinar

 

energy managementThe Knowledge Transfer Network is organising a webinar to promote a new Innovate UK competition that will open in 2016.

Innovate UK is allocating up to £1.5m for their “Energy Game Changer” competition. The funding will be allocated to feasibility studies led by SMEs who can provide disruptive solutions to long established challenges which currently cost the energy sector hundreds of millions of pounds per year.

Amongst the high level challenges where radical multi-disciplinary solutions are sought are:

  • improving condition monitoring, inspection, handling, characterisation and repair of energy assets
  • minimising the risk and cost of operating in remote and hazardous environments
  • generating and handling ‘big data’ to optimise performance, efficiency, safety and security
  • getting individuals and communities excited and engaged in energy reducing the consumers energy bills

To encourage radical change and new ideas, the competition is specifically looking for solutions from innovative SMEs whose main business is divorced from the energy sector and can look at the challenges from new perspectives. Such organisations may be engaged in activities such as; ICT, digital, design, electronics, sensors, modelling, virtual reality, gaming, robotics, UAVs, forensics, manufacturing, inspection and advanced materials.

We also welcome technology transfer ideas from other sectors such as; defence, automotive, medical, space and creative industries.

Innovate UK is looking to fund around 20 feasibility studies of between £50-100k in size and 6-12 month duration.

Cyber Security Innovation Vouchers – Round 14

Up to £5k funding for start-up, micro, small and medium-sized enterprises to work with an external expert to gain the knowledge to innovate and grow. This voucher is only for cyber security advice including advice leading to certification under the Cyber Essentials Scheme.

Key insights for the 2035 robot revolution: New report

A “robot revolution” will transform the global economy over the next 20 years, cutting the costs of doing business but exacerbating social inequality, as machines take over everything, according to a new study by investment bank Bank of America Merrill Lynch.
“We are facing a paradigm shift which will change the way we live and work,” the authors say. “The pace of disruptive technological innovation has gone from linear to parabolic in recent years. Penetration of robots and artificial intelligence has hit every industry sector, and has become an integral part of our daily lives.”
The report outlines the opportunities for investors in robotics and artificial intelligence and cites recent research including Oxford University research that finds the coming revolution could leave up to 35% of all workers in the UK, and 47% of those in the US, at risk of being displaced by technology.
