Join a BU online event this Friday lunchtime on challenging the stigma around exercising with epilepsy

Exercising with Epilepsy, Friday 29th July, 12.30pm, online

Join psychology lecturer Dr Sarah Collard at a free online event this Friday to hear how her research is challenging the assumptions around exercising with epilepsy. Dr Collard was awarded ACORN funding to explore the physical activity levels of people with epilepsy in the UK. The project aimed to:

Establish self-reported physical activity and levels of sedentary behaviour.
Obtain epilepsy-related factors and socio-demographic information.
Investigate the associations between epilepsy-related factors, socio-demographics, and physical activity.

In the online discussion, Dr Collard will outline her findings so far, which will provide important data for people with epilepsy and their families and carers, as well as medical professionals and those working in the fitness and leisure sector.

Global interest in BU’s first online public lecture series

Attendees from Sierra Leone, the USA, Norway and the Netherlands were among those who joined BU’s online public lecture series.

Online Public Lecture Series 2022

Six online public lectures ran between February and July, showcasing BU research and expertise. Topics included healthy ageing, the Great British seaside, the wildlife of Poole Harbour, and how our ancient ancestors responded to crisis.

Events also explored BU research supporting the LGBTQ+ community and a discussion around the challenges and opportunities facing Dorset’s economy.

In total, over 1,400 people registered to attend the six events, with attendees joining from around the world. Over 800 people have also watched recordings of the events on the Crowdcast platform and the BU Research YouTube channel.

Engagement and Impact Facilitator in RDS Amanda Edwards, who helped to organise the series, said: “It has been brilliant to see such global interest in our events and to share our research with attendees from across the world. Thank you to all of the academics who participated in the events and shared fascinating insights into their work across such varied topics.

“We have exciting plans for the next series of online public lecture events and look forward to sharing the BU story with even more people.”

Keep telling us about all your social, cultural and community events – reporting period ends soon

We are collecting details of all events for external audiences taking place between 1 August 2021 and 31 July 2022

Thank you to everyone who has already provided information via the SharePoint site. The deadline for reporting is Friday 7 October 2022.

This data forms part of BU’s annual Higher Education – Business & Community Interaction survey and is used to calculate our Higher Education Innovation Funding (HEIF) grant. It also feeds into our submission to the Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF) so it is really important for us to provide a full and accurate picture of all our public engagement.

Which events do I need to report?

Public lectures & talks
Performance arts (music, dance, drama etc)
Exhibitions (galleries, museums etc)
Museum education
Media engagement (TV/radio interviews, podcasts etc)

If you’re not sure if your event is eligible for inclusion, the SharePoint site includes further details and guidance.

What data is collected?

We collect a wider range of data than is required for HE-BCI, for additional external and internal reporting, e.g. HEIF Annual Monitoring Statement and Athena Swan. For the purposes of the HE-BCI survey, you must record the following:

event dates – to ensure eligibility
whether the event or activity was free or chargeable
the number of attendees (or views/visitors)
the amount of staff time in hours needed for delivery.

Without this specific data, we will not be able to include your event in the survey.

The SharePoint site provides details about which data is collected and how, including calculating attendee numbers and staff time, and reporting online activities and multiple related events. Sharing your research with the public at Café Scientifique – Sept onwards

If you’re interested in sharing your scientific research with a friendly public audience – complete our form.

We’re currently organising our series of Café Scientifique events for Sept 2022 – July 2023 and we’re looking for people interested in getting involved. Café Scientifique is a public event format, popular around the world, where anyone can come along to explore the latest research in science and technology in a casual café setting. Following a short presentation by a researcher, there is plenty of time for questions and discussion from a varied public audience.

Taking place on a weekday evening, Café Scientifique events run monthly from June (excepting August and January). They’re organised centrally by the BU Public Engagement with Research Team, part of Research Development and Support (RDS). It’s a fantastic opportunity to get experience in engaging with the public in a friendly atmosphere and gain surprising insights into your own work.

We welcome academics at all career stages, although this is particularly valuable for those just getting started in engaging with the public. We also encourage collaboration between less experienced and more experienced public speakers – to provide a valuable learning experience with the support to keep things going smoothly.

Regarding your research – although we use a broad definition of ‘science’, the audience do have certain expectations from the name, so we do not tend to feature research outside of the broad ‘science’ theme.

Helping to organise events – whether it’s finding speakers, helping polish a presentation, promoting these events far and wide and more – we’d welcome any BU staff or students who’d like to help out with various bits behind the scenes on these events. This is a great way to dip your toes in the world of public engagement, gain experience in organising events and work on a fun project with others across BU.

Join the Mental Health Research Seminar

Join us for a seminar (6 October 2022) given by Professor Sam Chamberlain, Professor of Psychiatry, University of Southampton and NIHR ARC Wessex Mental Health Research Hub Lead.

He will highlight projects currently supported through the Mental Research Hub, as part of the NIHR ARC Wessex. The Hub aims to bring together researchers from different disciplines and partners throughout the region to plan and conduct research and look at ways to implement findings at the point of care. It also encourages and support new research talent through mentorship, internships, a summer school, and new post-doctoral positions.

This seminar will provide a valuable opportunity to find out more about the Mental Health Research Hub, engage with researchers in Wessex to develop new research and potentially be involved with current projects.

India @ 75 – a conference from BU on 22 July

About this event

The workshop INDIA@75 celebrates the 75th anniversary of Indian independence and the myriad facets of the UK-India bilateral relationship, which is poised at a critical point this year with the Free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations going ahead towards a Diwali timeline.

The workshop also examines the growing role and importance of India at the Commonwealth and the multilateral level at the WTO. The FTA talks are expected to the central to the wide ranging deliberations and interactions but will also touch on the trade and economic exchanges that touch on all areas of lives from the cultural and creative collaboration in crucial sectors such as climate change, healthcare, technology, innovation and much more, with the Indian diaspora in the UK acting as the living bridge of this deep bond.

For this event, the keynote speakers and members of the panel include specialists from international trade, UN Sustainable Development Goals and IB fields. The workshop will include both academics and practitioners, and provide meaningful insight and impact, for fusing policy, business and trade within the context of ever growing UK-India relationship.

We also invite researchers, doctoral research students and collaborators, who will pick up key themes and findings from the workshop, to attend and facilitate research culminating in a series of Policy Briefs and research papers for submission to appropriate 3-star journals.

Refreshments will be provided, including lunch.

Invitation to the BCP Poverty Truth Commission launch

We would like to invite you to the Bournemouth, Christchurch ad Poole Poverty Truth Commission launch on Thursday 14th July 10-12.

The Poverty Truth Commission, is a new project rooted in lived experience which seeks to tackle the root causes of poverty in the BCP area. If you would like to understand more about how a Poverty Truth Commission works there is more information and a short 4 minute video on their website that explains it really well (scroll down to find the video): Poverty Truth – Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (povertytruthbcp.org)

The project so far

14 inspirational Community Commissioners (CCs) – those with lived experience of poverty locally – have agreed to become part of the Commission. They have been meeting together fortnightly since April to get to know each other, better understand the process, and tease out key themes common to their stories such as housing, mental health, rising costs, benefits. They have told the commission they already feel “less alone”, “really listened to” and “inspired”. They are now working together with the commission to design and prepare for the public launch event (10-12 on 14 July) where similar numbers of local leaders including myself (Mel Hughes) in my role as Academic lead for the BU PIER partnership will join them as Civic/Business Commissioners (CBCs) to work together to tackle the root causes of poverty over the coming year.

Start reporting your data for events with external audiences

We are now collecting information for the annual Higher Education – Business & Community Interaction (HE-BCI) survey. Building International Partnerships

On Monday 27th June Prof. Edwin van Teijlingen will be presenting at the ‘Global Partnership for International Research Meeting’ at the University of Huddersfield. The meeting is organised by Prof. Padam Simkhada, who is Associate Dean International and Professor of Global Health, as well as Visiting Professor at Bournemouth University. Edwin will be talking about his experience in building long-term sustainable and effective international partnerships, using examples from both the health and sociology field.

A current example he will highlight is one of Bournemouth University’s international research collaborations is the Nepal Federal Health System Project, led by the University of Sheffield. This three-year project (2020-2023) is funded by the Health Systems Research Initiative (incorporating the MRC, DFID, Wellcome Trust), it has partners in the UK and Nepal and bring together an interdisciplinary team of specialists in public health, sociology, health systems, social geography, health economic, political science, anthropology, medicine, emergency management, nursing & international development.

Doctoral College Afternoon Tea at the Beach

A huge ‘Thank You’ to everyone who came along to the Afternoon Tea at the Beach, at Branksome Dene Room on 15 June. The event was hosted by the Doctoral College for the BU postgraduate research community.

Postgraduate research students and supervisors were able to take some well-deserved time out to network and catch up in a relaxed beach location, with a sumptuous afternoon tea. It was a perfect celebration for PGRs returning to campus post the pandemic, enhanced by a beautiful sunny day by the sea.

Workshop ‘Sensitive Pasts and Difficult Presents: working with young people through participatory arts’ – 27th June, 2022

Some of you might be interested in this workshop, titled ‘Sensitive Pasts and Difficult Presents: working with young people through participatory arts‘, taking place this upcoming Monday, 27^th June 2022, at BU (Talbot Campus). The workshop aims to bring together colleagues from across BU’s research centres, exploring how working with and for young people in sensitive contexts, both, locally and across the world, can be informed by interdisciplinary approaches (including Social Sciences, the Arts, and arts-based technologies).

Several colleagues will provide short presentations and thought pieces based on their research and experiences in the application of participatory arts-based methods in such contexts. Including a ‘world café’, the workshop aims to provide a forum to compare and exchange our experiences, learning and research outcomes rather than a classic, entirely lecture-based format.

This event is organised by the Centre for Seldom Heard Voices (Stephanie Schwandner-Sievers; RA Emily Fisher). The workshop includes colleagues from CEMP, CESJ, EMERGE, and further members are warmly invited to attend. We hope this event will be of particular interest to colleagues working in and through the participatory arts, specifically with vulnerable or marginalised groups, internationally or closer to home.

Apply now to showcase your research at the Royal Society’s Summer Science Exhibition next summer.

The Royal Society is looking for researchers to take part in their flagship event celebrating the cutting-edge of UK science.

Taking place in July 2023, the Exhibition provides an excellent opportunity to engage a variety of audiences with your research, including members of the public, school groups, policy makers and potential funders and fellows of the Royal Society. Each year, they welcome thousands of visitors through their doors and reach many more through national coverage on TV or in the media.

It’s a great opportunity to raise the profile of UK research and gain valuable experience communicating with diverse audience groups. The Royal Society also helps applicants every step of the way, from guidance on submitting a proposal to preparing and coordinating an exhibit.

Excess Treatment Costs thresholds lowered
Excess Treatment Costs (ETC) are costs incurred when treatments given as part of research studies are more expensive than the care participants would normally receive. The ETC threshold has been lowered, providing additional funding to secondary care providers with an additional 120 NHS sites receiving payments, helping to deliver the Government’s research vision. Evaluation is about proving and improving. It can help you better understand your audience and ensure that you are making a difference.

We’ve organised an interactive session with industry leaders the NCCPE, to look at why evaluation is important, ways to get started, exploring different techniques, and to consider what evaluation can tell you, your organisation and funder.

We’ll also focus on how to conduct evaluation, participating in practical activities and discussion to demystify evaluation and find the fun in revealing the effectiveness of your work.

We’ve organised an interactive session with industry leaders the NCCPE, to look at why evaluation is important, ways to get started, exploring different techniques, and to consider what evaluation can tell you, your organisation and funder.

We’ll also focus on how to conduct evaluation, participating in practical activities and discussion to demystify evaluation and find the fun in revealing the effectiveness of your work.

These sessions are aimed at people with some experience or awareness of public engagement with research; however, the session will be open to all experience levels.
