BU at ATLAS annual conference

BU had a strong presence at the ATLAS (Association for Tourism and Leisure Education and Research) annual conference which took place in the historic town of Canterbury, between 13-16 September, on “Tourism, Lifestyles and Locations”.

BU has been a member of the ATLAS network for many years and Dr Lenia Marques was one of the founders of the Special Interest Group on Events back in 2010. The group is very active and has several ongoing projects and collaborations amongst its members.

Several BU academics presented and discussed their research in Canterbury. Dr Hanaa Osman and Dr Lorraine Brown presented a piece of research which touches upon the status of women in tourism and which provoked debate on intercultural issues. Dr Anya Chapman presented her work on piers, which are so important for UK coastal destinations, such as Bournemouth. Dr Jaeyeon Choe presented her research on tourism and quality of life in Macao and we should congratulate her on her first attendance as the ATLAS Asia representative on the board.

Dr Lenia Marques presented her research on events and communities and practice among expats in a panel organised together with the Department of Events and Leisure and the Department of Tourism and Hospitality dedicated to “Lifestyle and communities: sharing in the digital era”. The panel, put together by Dr. Lenia Marques, Juliette Hecquet and Prof. Dimitrios Buhalis, aimed at discussing new trends in the fields of leisure and tourism connected to lifestyle and the sharing economy.

Overall, the discussions at the conference were animated and friendly, raising some of the big issues of our time. Collaborations, projects and further developments will surely continue in the run-up to the next ATLAS annual conference to be held in Viana do Castelo, Portugal (12-16 September 2017) under the theme “Destinations past, present and future”.

During November 2016, BU will be hosting the ESRC Festival of Social Science. This is part of a a national celebration of the social sciences that open up sites of sharing and critical reflection through debates, conferences, workshops, interactive seminars, film screenings, virtual exhibitions and much more.

Our programme of Fair Access Research draws on innovative insights and research approaches from the social sciences in order to understand and make a difference for students who are underrepresented in or marginalized by higher education.

For the Festival we will be working with a group of students to support them to share their stories through photography, group reflection and creative retelling. In telling individual stories we hope to elucidate collective responses to the very real challenges of being a student at this current moment.

You are invited to a workshop on Monday 7th November between 10:00-13:00 exploring what it means to become and be a student in the 21st century.

The workshop will be a space where students’ voices and stories are heard, listened to and reflected on. This project is rooted in the idea that the most effective research and policies are those shaped by the voices of the communities intended to be reached. The stories and exhibition will creative the space for us all to learn together to make higher education more accessible, engaging and equitable for all.

BU DEL Academic joins ATLAS board!

2016 ATLAS annual conference board meeting

Dr. Jaeyeon Choe (Department of Events and Leisure) has been appointed as an ATLAS Asia-Pacific Chapter Coordinator. She has worked on multiple projects in Asia. She had worked in China and Macau, and has worked as a visiting researcher at Chiang Mai University, Thailand. She also helped organize an international conference, “Vernacular Religion, Folk Belief, and Traditions of the Supernatural” in Macau, March 2015. She recently completed a funded research project on cross-cultural understanding of quality of life among local residents, skilled and unskilled migrant workers in Macau (Funded by Institute for Tourism Studies, Macao 2015).

With her background, experiences and networks in the region, she will lead projects that bridge gaps in research and other ATLAS activities. As a first step, she plans to organize an academic conference in January 2018 in the South East Asian region. She welcomes any ideas or collaboration from BU colleagues.

This seminar will focus on how technology has transformed microenterprise and work and is likely to shape these in the future. The first key aim is to contribute to understanding of digital microenterprise and work in a global perspective. Combining both Global North and Global South perspectives, this seminar seeks to show how new technology including social media and mobile phones are shaping enterprise and work practices. The potentials and risks involved in advanced technologies for how work is performed and experienced and microenterprises set up and organized will be critically interrogated. The second key aim is to explore new data and methods to reveal and understand digital work and microenterprise which are often ‘hidden’ in workers’ and entrepreneurs’ homes and therefore require novel research approaches. New (big) data sources and emerging research infrastructures will be presented and their application for studying enterprise and work practices discussed.

Global Entrepreneurship Development Centre (GEDC) – Conference

The GEDC is a global community on entrepreneurship research. It is the mission of the GEDC to raise levels of knowledge, theory and practice on entrepreneurship worldwide through the promotion of research.

Members of the GEDC are involved in joint entrepreneurship research programs, joint PhD workshops and conferences, faculty exchanges and cooperation. The theme for this first conference is New Frontiers in International Entrepreneurship: Research and Practice to be held at Kingston Business School, London, on 5-7 October 2016.

‘Students who bounce back’: Photo exhibition

From 12 September, the Centre for Excellence in Learning (CEL) is holding a photo exhibition in Poole House, next to the Cash Office. This exhibition is part of the ‘Students who bounce back’ project, a study funded by Bournemouth University’s Fair Access Agreement Management Group. The study is being conducted by researchers at CEL, in co-production with student carers*.

The photographs displayed in the exhibition were taken by student carers as part of a photodiary exercise. Some of them also came to the University this week to formally launch the exhibition.

‘Students who bounce back’ has the following objectives:

To explore the life experience of student carers at BU and the impact of caring in their learning experiences.
To determine, in co-production with students, the main motivations and expectations of their university experience, and their contact with the different support mechanisms in place at BU.
To contribute with empirical data to the development of the concept of psychosocial scaffoldings as enablers of resilience (or the ability to ‘bounce back’).
To contribute to wider debates and developments about the learning experience of student carers in the Higher Education sector.

*A carer is defined as anyone who cares, unpaid, for a family member who, due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction, cannot cope without their support.

Save the Date: 19/10/16 – Global Challenges Sandpit

On Wednesday, 19th October 2016, BU’s Global Engagement team (as part of the new Research Knowledge Exchange Development Framework) will be facilitating a Sandpit event on Global Challenges, attended by staff from the DFID and other organisations.

Which means…?

We’re seeking to come up with novel research that could for part of the UK’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) commitment.

So, who should attend?

We want anyone who thinks they might have something to contribute, and who is available all day on Wednesday 19th October to come along. We will also be inviting relevant external attendees to contribute to the day.

What do I need to prepare in advance? What will the sandpit entail?

Absolutely nothing in advance. During the sandpit, you’ll be guided through a process which results in the development of research ideas. The process facilitates creativity, potentially leading to innovative and interdisciplinary research ideas. These ideas will be explored with other attendees, and further developed based on the feedback received.

What if I don’t have time to think about ideas in advance?

You don’t need to do this. Some inspiring speakers with a range of backgrounds will be coming along to give you ideas…

What about afterwards? Do I need to go away and do loads of work?

Well… that depends! The sandpit will result in some novel research ideas. Some of these may be progressed immediately; others might need more time to think about. You may find common ground with other attendees which you choose to take forward in other ways, such as writing a paper or applying for research funding.

What if my topic area is really specific, such as health?

Your contribution will be very welcome! One of the main benefits of a sandpit event is to bring together individuals with a range of backgrounds and specialisms who are able to see things just that bit differently to one another.

So, is this just networking?

Definitely not! It is a facilitated session with the primary intention of developing innovative research ideas, which also enables the development of networks. It gives you the opportunity to explore research ideas which you may develop over time, together with the chance to find common ground with academics from across BU and beyond.

So, how do I book onto this event?

To take part in this exciting opportunity, all participants should complete the Global Challenges Sandpit Application Form and return this to Dianne Goodman by Friday, 30th September. Places are strictly limited and you will be be contacted to confirm a place place on the sandpit with arrangements nearer the time. The event will be held in Bournemouth.

By applying, you agree to attend for the full duration of the event on 19th October (c. 9:30 – 16:30).

This event provides an overview of all the practical information staff need to begin developing their research plans at BU, using both internal and external networks; to develop and disseminate research outcomes; and maximising the available funding opportunities.

The primary aim of this event is to raise participants’ awareness of how to get started in research at BU or, for more established staff, how to take their research to the next level

CPD Forum Conference 2016: Strategies for growing your university’s CPD offerings

Geographies of Religion and Spirituality at Royal Geographical Society conference, London 2016

Following my field-work on spiritual tourism and meditation in Chiang Mai, I (with Michael Di Giovine at West Chester University, US, Michael Hitchcock at Goldsmiths, University of London, UK, and Michael O’ Regan at Bournemouth University, UK) organized two panel sessions on Geographies of Religion and Spirituality: beyond ‘officially’ sacred at the Royal Geographical Society conference in London, 2016. The sessions had 9 interesting and diverse papers from the U.K., U.S., Ireland, Thailand, Norway and Australia. The panelists were from disciplines and fields as diverse as Geography, Anthropology, tourism studies, event management, art and design and natural resource management. I am currently communicating with several editors to make a decision as which journal these papers may be published under a special issue theme.

We also had stimulating discussions over 4 hours at the conference.

Pilgrims and tourists exist on a continuum of sacredness and secularity, and the distinction between tourism/pilgrimage, tourist/pilgrim, and secular/sacred is rather complex. While there have been ongoing discussions about categorizing ‘pilgrims’ and/or ‘tourists,’ it is still challenging despite frequent attempts. Thus, in these panel sessions, we discussed how religious spaces are central to the lives of pilgrims, and how these religious spaces have meanings to pilgrims and tourists. Beyond the ‘officially sacred,’ we explored the meanings of religious space to pilgrims and tourists to provide a blueprint for how work in the geography of religion and the field of religious tourism may move forward. I believe we have achieved moving forward with the on-going discussions and theorization process all together as an interdisciplinary team. Links to more photos:

CQR Kicks Off “In Conversation” Seminars this Wed 7 Sept

The Centre for Qualitative Research is kicking off its new seminar series on Wednesday 7 September at 1 pm in Royal London House RLH 201 Masterclass Suite.

New to BU and FHSS, Prof. Sam Porter (Head of Social Work & Social Sciences Dept. at FHSS) will join CQR’s Kip Jones and Caroline Ellis-Hill “in conversation” about “The Relationship between the Arts and Healthcare”.

Because CQR is keen to make information available to students and staff about qualitative METHODS, the seminars will be arranged somewhat differently than the typical lunchtime seminar.

We are asking TWO (or more) presenters to agree to present each research method as a CONVERSATION…first, between each other, and then with the audience. We are also asking that no PowerPoint be used in order that it is truly a conversation and NOT a lecture. The conversations will be about a particular research method and its pros and cons, NOT research projects or outcomes.

The “In Conversation with …” Seminar Series will be held on the FIRST WED of each month for nine months beginning in September. They will run from 1 pm until 1:50.

We are then hoping that many will join us for a CQR ‘KoffeeKlatch’ following at Naked Cafe next to RLH after the seminar.

We anticipate that by making the CQR Seminar Series really unique and exciting that they will inspire students and academics alike to investigate the wide range of qualitative methods and expertise available at CQR, and enrich their research projects by doing so.

Friday 16th September: Professor Christoph Teller presents ‘Why consumers shop where they do’

Professor Christoph Teller, Chair in Retailing and Marketing at the University of Surrey, will discuss why shoppers shop where they do through a presentation of a meta-analyses study. The study he presents aims to identify the major antecedents of offline and online retail patronage. In his talk he will outline the retail patronage work of Pan and Zinkhan (2006) and discuss how he extends their view and develops conceptual models of offline and online retail patronage based on Sheth’s (1999) integrated theory of patronage behaviour and Finn and Louviere’s (1996) specification in a retail patronage context. The models he identifies proposes direct effects between antecedents (stimuli), i.e., mainly manageable attributes of retailers, and the retail patronage (response or shopping predisposition). The study is based upon a meta-analysis of more than 300 empirical studies and makes a theoretical as well as practical contribution to the topic area as it provides an overview on, and detailed insights into, patronage research in an offline as well as online context.

A roaring evening hosted by the Graduate School

Over 200 of our postgraduate research and taught students came together to celebrate the end of a challenging year at the BU Postgraduate Summer ball organised by The Graduate School.

The event gave students the opportunity to relax, dress up, and celebrate being a part of the postgraduate community at the prestigious Bournemouth Hilton Hotel. Live entertainment was provided throughout the night along with a few surprises to capture some truly memorable moments.

Mental health project in Nepal highlighted in national media

At the National Workshop on Mental Health Education & Research in Kathmandu organised by Tribhuvan University, Bournemouth University and Liverpool John Moores University last week we had quite a few television camera crews and journalists present. Sabitri Dhakal, one of the journalists from The Himalayan Times an English-language daily newspaper in Nepal, wrote a nice feature length article. This piece was based on interviews with BU Visiting Faculty Padam Simkhada and Prof. Edwin van Teijlingen conducted at our workshop. Her article with the title ‘Understanding Mental Health’ is available online.

Mental health in pregnant women and new mothers is increasing recognised on the global health agenda. In Nepal mental health is generally a difficult to topic to discuss. THET, a London-based organisation, funded Bournemouth University, and Liverpool John Moores University in the UK and Tribhuvan University in Nepal to train community-based maternity workers on issues around mental health. Thus far three groups of UK health and education experts have gone out to Nepal to train these communit maternity care providers, called Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs). ANMs, who are the key maternity service providers in rural birthing centres of Nepal, have received only 18 months of training and the training curriculum does not refer to dealing with mental health issues. The next group of volunteers is due to travel in September.
