Workshop: working with the press

rkeo-dev-logo-square

Despite the increasing popularity of online media sources, ‘traditional’ media outlets still tend to be the main way most people consume news.  Working with the media can be a very powerful way of sharing your research findings with the general public or with specialist audiences.  It’s a good way of disseminating your research, which can lead to impact further down the line.

As part of our new Research & Knowledge Exchange Development Framework, we will be running a session about working with the media as one way of sharing your research.  This session is part of the ‘planning for impact and communicating research’ pathway.

This workshop will be led by BU’s PR manager, Nathaniel Hobby, who will take you through the basics of working with the press.

Date & time: Monday 5 December 9:30am – 11:30am

Location: Lansdowne Campus

For further information and to book, see BU’s staff intranet.

Workshop: using social media

rkeo-dev-logo-square

Social media is a popular way of sharing information and connecting with audiences you might not otherwise be able to reach.  It’s a good outlet for sharing research findings and for learning more about potential stakeholders in your area.

As part of our new Research & Knowledge Exchange Development Framework, we will be running a session about using social media to share your research and connect with stakeholders.  This session is part of the ‘planning for impact and communicating research’ pathway.

This workshop will be led by BU’s social media manager – Jasmine Connolly, who will take you through the basics of using social media at work.

Date & time: Wednesday 30 November 9:30am – 11:30am

Location: Talbot Campus

For further information and to book, see BU’s staff intranet.

Research Funders Guide

map of scienceThe Research Funders Guide (find it in the Research Toolkit along the blog menu bar) has been updated.  As well as updating the call deadlines in the ‘standard calls for major funders’ pages,  each of the pages within the guide have been updated to include a link to the relevant pathway available in the RKE Development Framework.  This links up the opportunities available to support you in applying for the external funding explained in the guide pages.

dev_frameworkFor those of you who haven’t yet heard about the Research and Knowledge Exchange (RKE) Development Framework, it offers a range of opportunities for academics at all career stages to develop their skills, knowledge and capabilities in relation to research and knowledge exchange. It has been implemented in response to the changing external environment, and developed in consultation with academic colleagues to ensure a strategic fit between the training and development opportunities on offer, and the needs and wishes of academic colleagues.

If you’re interested in applying for external research funding then please contact the RKEO’s Funding Development Team.

The Graduate School presents … the Researcher Development Programme

At the start of the academic year, the new and improved Researcher Development Programme (RDP) was launched by the Graduate School. The programme, aimed at postgraduate researchers, now consists of an annual programme of 145 diverse training workshops, online video resources and podcasts in addition to 31 online training programmes. The RDP aims to increase the academic and professional skills and knowledge of BU’s PGR’s, assisting them throughout their PhD journey, whilst also enhancing their employability after completion of their research. Now, don’t take my word for it, here is what PGR students say about the programme …Click Here

Influencing public policy – training session

dev_framework

Working with policy-makers can be a really useful way of getting research recognised and used by professionals in the relevant field, resulting in an impact on society.  Not only can attempting to influence policy raise the profile of the research and have profound implications for society, it can also considerably raise the profile of the academic behind the research, creating room for possible new partnerships and future collaboration. However, it isn’t always obvious where to begin.

As part of RKEO’s new development framework BU’s Policy Adviser, Jane Forster, will be running a training session on 27 October about how to influence public policy with research.  Research can be particularly influential in policy making as it can provide the basis for an evidence-based change or amendment to legislation, but knowing how to go about it is key.

Further details and information about how to sign up can be found on the staff intranet.

This workshop forms part of the ‘planning for impact and communicating research‘ pathway, which includes sessions on working with the media, developing a public engagement event and using social media.
